Every now and then someone asks if I can sell their sounds on Narfsounds.com

The answer is no.

Narfsounds isn’t a marketplace where anyone can upload a pack and put it up for sale.

The value isn’t in having a large catalog of random sounds. The value is in solving specific problems for keyboard players in live bands.

Can a keyboard player accept a gig on short notice because they already have the sounds?

Can they learn a new song without spending hours programming?

Can they walk into a rehearsal knowing the splits, layers, scenes, samples and controller assignments have already been thought through?

Can they expand their band’s repertoire because the sounds are no longer a barrier?

Those are the problems I’m trying to solve.

Every performance in a Narfsounds pack has been selected, programmed, tested and refined with those goals in mind. Many have gone through multiple revisions over several years.

If a customer has a question, needs support, wants an explanation of how something works, or needs help adapting a performance to their own setup, I need to know the product inside and out.

There have only been a handful of exceptions. Harry and I co-developed the Movie and TV Themes Pack for the Yamaha Montage and Favorite Covers Sets 1 and 2 for the Roland Fantom. Even then, we were on FaceTime multiple times a day comparing notes, testing changes and refining sounds. Those projects took roughly twice as long because we both wanted the end result to meet the same standards as everything else on the site.

I can’t impose my standards on someone else’s work, and I can’t confidently support a product that I didn’t create or help create.

That’s why every product on Narfsounds has my name behind it.

Wow! This could have been so much worse so I consider myself lucky! I knew that I should have levelled out the arms for the Korg Prologue 16 and I knew I should’ve checked that loud bang I heard last night. It fell from the top tier of my 6 stacker stand, my plastic tub containing my power leads got smashed as it broke the fall. It could’ve easily wiped out the Fantom, Kronos 3, OBX8 and the 2 Nords below it. It may actually have hit the Nautilus but luckily I rested the thick padded cover for the Jupiter on it. Lesson learned. Just one broken C key, it’s powering on and playing fine and no damage on the chassis. I’ve ordered the replacement key and it is on its way. I think I’ll be able to fix it myself.

This set is built around songs that have been requested again and again over many years. Some of them were specifically requested by students during lessons when they wanted help recreating the sounds for songs they were performing with their bands.

To decide what makes the cut, I go back through those requests and create a playlist for myself. I spend time listening to each song and asking a few questions.

Does it contain a distinctive keyboard sound that really defines the song?

Can it be recreated in a few minutes using ordinary factory presets? If the answer is yes, I usually move on. There’s little value in adding a song that most keyboard players can already put together themselves with minimal effort.

Does the keyboard offer a feature or function that could make the song easier, more practical or more seamless to perform live? This might be a custom split, scene changes, arpeggios, trigger notes, samples, Super K**b assignments or controller mappings that reduce the amount of work the player needs to do on stage.

If the answer is yes, it becomes a candidate for a Favorite Covers performance.

When a song makes it into a Favorite Covers set, it has earned its place. Every performance is included because it offers something beyond simply selecting a preset. Whether that’s a distinctive signature sound, a more seamless way to perform the song live, or a keyboard setup that would take considerable time to build from scratch, there needs to be a clear reason for it to be there.

Knowing how to program a synth and having time to program a synth are two very different things.

You just unboxed a MODX M. It's sitting there looking incredible. And if you're anything like most serious players, you already know exactly how deep that engine goes.

That learning curve isn't something you clear in a week. But right now the gig is in a week and the setlist has 50 songs on it.

The Favorite Covers Sets at narfsounds.com are the most comprehensive collection of gig-ready sounds available for the MODX M. Over 200 song specific sounds, meticulously crafted for working keyboardists. Load them up, rehearse properly and walk onto that stage ready.

The Favorite Covers Bundles for the Yamaha Montage, MODX, MODX+, Montage M and MODX M, the 80s and Beyond Pack for the Korg Kronos, the Fantom EX Covers Pack, and especially the Nord Stage 4 Cover Sound Packs have gradually become something much bigger than just collections of sounds to play cover songs.

Over the years, they’ve evolved into toolboxes of sounds drawn from my own analog synth collection and years of studying the original recordings they came from.

Ironically, a huge part of that journey started while programming the Gig Performer and Arturia V Collection packs. Spending so much time inside those virtual recreations pushed me deeper into understanding the original instruments themselves, which eventually triggered a full blown analog synth acquisition spree on my end.

That rabbit hole led to instruments like the Roland Jupiter 8, Oberheim OB series, Prophet 5, Juno synths, Moogs and countless hours comparing them against the records they helped define.

A lot of what I learned from that process eventually flowed back into the cover packs themselves.

What started as building performances and patches for specific songs slowly turned into building massive palettes of authentic synth sounds that can instantly cover huge parts of a live set.

A lot of the sounds inside these packs now go far beyond the original song they were created for. Once they’re inside your keyboard, they become part of your own live arsenal and often end up being reused across dozens of songs in completely different ways.

That’s probably one of the most satisfying parts of building these libraries.

It’s just a piano sound for the actual keyboard parts but in a band with one guitar player, you’ll need this steady rhythm guitar loop. Change the rhythm using the superknob and just trigger the synth strings while playing the main piano riff later in the song. Of course that massive reverse piano build up just adds to that momentum
