Coastal homes offer extraordinary opportunities for connection to landscape, light and views, but they can also place significant demands on windows and doors.

Exposure, orientation, weather sealing, timber selection, glazing, thresholds, coatings and hardware are all part of the equation. Often, the success of the finished joinery comes down to how well these considerations are resolved together.

This is where Acacia’s experience becomes an important part of the project team. Working closely with architects and builders from the early stages, we bring specialist knowledge of timber, detailing, engineering and manufacture to help develop solutions that balance architectural intent with performance, buildability and longevity.

For bespoke coastal homes, there is rarely a standard answer. Each opening and each site brings its own considerations, requiring careful design, detailed planning and precision craftsmanship.

This South Cronulla home feels made for spring. With the ocean only 400 metres away in three directions, casement, awning and louvre windows as well as generous sliding doors open the house to fresh coastal air, allowing breezes to move naturally through the living spaces and out to the verandahs and gardens.

When conditions aren’t quite so favourable, the house is designed to perform just as well. Blower door testing achieved 7 air changes per hour at 50Pa, a result considered high performance in terms of airtightness and a testament to both the window and door seals and the quality of construction by Build by Design.

The result is the best of both worlds – a naturally ventilated home that can be opened generously to the breeze on a beautiful spring day, while maintaining comfort when conditions change.

Conceived by Emily Knight Design as a distinctly Australian beach house, the single-storey home is arranged as two pavilions, wrapped in verandahs and surrounded by gardens. Simple, relaxed and beautifully suited to its coastal setting.

Coopers Shoot is a remarkable study in scale, materiality and connection to landscape.

Situated high on a ridgeline in the Byron hinterland, the home by Polly Harbison Design and Knaus Constructions has an extraordinary sense of place. Terraced platforms of basalt stone and concrete give the architecture a grounded, almost elemental quality, while expansive openings draw in light, air and sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.

Acacia was commissioned to craft an extensive suite of bespoke windows, doors and screens in Australian Spotted Gum. Against the solidity of the stone and concrete, the timber introduces a natural softness and richness, while retractable sliding doors and timber screens allow the character of the living spaces to shift with the conditions outside.

With the doors drawn back into concealed cavities, the boundaries of the home seem to fall away, creating an incredible sense of openness and bringing the landscape right into the heart of the architecture.

Almost every joinery element was bespoke, calling for detailed design development, precision manufacturing and close collaboration with the architect and builder.

At Canopy House in Sawtell, Spotted Gum joinery plays a defining role in the architecture, bringing privacy, filtered light and natural ventilation to this coastal family home.

Central to the design is an extraordinary 17.3-metre highlight window spanning the main living space. The unit combines fixed and louvre glazing with sliding timber batten screens up to four metres long.

Its scale required a carefully planned approach to manufacture, transport and installation. The entire unit was constructed and fitted in our workshop, then disassembled into sections for delivery and reassembled on site.

An impressive example of bespoke joinery, where careful planning in the workshop translates into a beautifully resolved architectural element.

Designed to embrace its harbourside setting, Waterfront Tavern at Shell Cove Marina shifts effortlessly with the weather and the seasons. Expansive hydraulic awning windows open the dining spaces to the harbour and coastal air when conditions allow, then close to provide shelter and comfort when the weather turns.

Crafted by Acacia in Accoya, these substantial timber-framed windows required careful integration of the hydraulic operating system. Acacia worked closely with Renlita engineers to incorporate the hydraulic hardware seamlessly within each frame.

The result is a considered piece of engineering that allows the architecture to maintain a strong connection to its waterfront setting throughout the year.

Just sometimes, the beauty of our sliding timber doors lies in not seeing them at all.

Designed by Akimbo Architecture and built by Moneghittie Built, this incredible Clareville pool house features expansive Spotted Gum sliding doors that disappear completely into recessed wall pockets, allowing the interior to open effortlessly to the pool, garden and surrounding bushland.

When the weather calls for a little more shelter, the doors slide back into place, with the rich Spotted Gum frames bringing warmth and definition to the concrete and stone palette.

The result feels intimate and cocooning, with the timber window framing greenery beyond and reinforcing the home’s connection with nature.

Designed by Sam Crawford Architects as a place for both connection and moments of solitude, this quiet room shows how thoughtfully considered material choices can bring warmth, texture and a sense of calm to an interior.

Australian hardwoods or engineered timber – which is the better choice for architectural windows and doors?

As engineered products become increasingly prominent, it's easy to assume newer means better. The reality is far more nuanced.

Premium Australian hardwoods such as Flooded Gum, Blackbutt and Spotted Gum offer exceptional strength and durability, alongside the warmth, texture and natural character that make genuine hardwood so compelling in contemporary architecture.

Just as importantly, performance depends on more than the species itself. At Acacia, we invest considerable time in sourcing high-quality timber from reputable suppliers, then combine it with detailed shop drawings, precision engineering and decades of specialist craftsmanship.

Engineered timbers are certainly the best approach for some projects and applications. For others, carefully selected and expertly manufactured Australian hardwood can deliver exceptional performance and natural beauty, while also offering a more cost-effective solution.

A recent visit to the Southern Highlands offered a firsthand look at the remarkable progress being made by Acutis on this extraordinary new residence.

Set across an expansive 100-acre property and designed by MHDP Architects, this is a truly significant build. The first stage of our bespoke timber windows is now being installed, marking an exciting milestone as the home begins to take shape.

With the Southern Highlands renowned for its harsh winters, thermal efficiency has been a key consideration from the outset. Our bespoke timber windows have been manufactured with Low-E toughened double glazing, combining the natural insulating properties of premium Australian hardwood with high-performance glazing to help reduce heat transfer and improve year-round comfort.

This performance is further enhanced by a meticulously detailed building envelope. Constructed using Dincel wall construction, the home incorporates comprehensive Pro Clima systems throughout. Specifically, around each of our window openings, Pro Clima TESCON EXTOSEAL® sill tape is being carefully installed to create a durable, weather-tight seal, helping to minimise air and moisture ingress while supporting the long-term thermal performance of the home.

Combined with hydronic in-floor heating, these carefully considered systems will work together to create a home that is warm, comfortable and exceptionally energy efficient.
