General information
History Violence against women continues to be a serious problem in Canada. Half of Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. Every minute of every day, a Canadian woman or child is sexually assaulted. Since January of this year in Chilliwack, there have been 105 reports to RCMP of sexual assault and 296 reports of family violence. Worse, those numbers reflect only those incidents reported to police, as some victims never tell anyone about the abuse. With those numbers in mind, local social workers and charities are rallying to raise awareness about domestic violence. This October, Chilliwack residents are being urged to light up the night with a purple light and send the message that domestic violence has no place in our community. The Purple Light Nights campaign honours victims of domestic violence. From Oct. 1 to 31, residents and businesses are encouraged to shine a purple light. Your light will support those who have survived domestic violence and help give hope to those still living with abuse. A tree lighting ceremony has been planned for Monday, Oct. 4 outside Chilliwack City Hall at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend this ceremony. "Domestic violence has far-reaching effects on families, children and our community," said Chilliwack social worker April Goertzen. "Every woman has the right to live free from violence in her home, workplace and community." October is domestic violence awareness month, and purple is the symbolic colour of domestic violence. Strings of purple lights can be purchased at Logan's Home Hardware in Chilliwack; bulbs are available by donation at Nuggets Used Books, Logan's Home Hardware, Vedder Home Hardware in Sardis, Chilliwack Community Services, Mary's Uniforms, Ann Davis Transition Society on Young Road, and Chilliwack City Hall. - For more information on how to get involved in Chilliwack contact Beverly Coles, specialized victim assistance, at 604-793-7211.
