Fabrication project for , designed by Vancouver-based Industrial Designer .
The apparent simplicity of this project conceals its intricate construction nature, emphasizing the idea that what appears simple is, in fact, complex. Three hollow Douglas fir volumes, seemingly suspended in space, are structurally supported by four 1/2” tempered glass panels. The wooden components require a delicate balance of strength and lightness to perform as intended. The wood texture and grain figures appear to effortlessly wrap around each face of the volumes like magic, without revealing their internal construction.
This project evolved into a precision exercise, challenging us to develop various jigs to mock up and position all parts with meticulous accuracy. This step proved crucial as a measure to integrate and attach the wooden volumes to the perforated glass using precisely placed stainless steel Stand-Offs.
A classic Workbench fabrication project, overcoming multiple challenges in the pursuit of built perfection. We take pride in all the key decisions made throughout the project, resulting in clean transitions and harmonious connections between noble materials such as glass, stainless steel, and engineered wood, ultimately contributing to the realization of Calen Knauf’s design vision for this fun product, now available through Reigning Champ.
