Gnee Steel provides weathering steel products that comply with the ASTM A242 standard. This is a high-strength low-alloy structural steel standard formulated by the American Society for Testing and Materials, specifically designed for applications resistant to atmospheric corrosion. All the steel materials under this standard are of the weathering steel type.

It contains a small amount of alloying elements such as copper, chromium, and nickel, which can promote the formation of a protective oxide film (rust layer). There are two main strength grades and the astm a242 steel yield strength:

Astm a242 type 1: The minimum yield strength is 50,000 psi (345 MPa).

Astm a242 Type 2: The minimum yield strength is 42,000 psi (290 MPa).

It is usually applicable to steel plates and profiles with a thickness ranging from 1.6 mm to 100 mm, and is commonly used in bridge structures, building exteriors, power transmission towers, containers, railway carriages and other outdoor structures that require resistance to atmospheric corrosion.

It has obvious advantages. It can naturally form a protective rust layer without needing painting, has low maintenance costs, a long service life, and presents a unique aesthetic appearance over time. However, special welding techniques may be required during welding, and additional protective measures may be necessary in certain extreme environments such as marine environments.

Moreover, ASTM A242 is one of the earlier weathering steel standards. In some applications, it has gradually been replaced by ASTM A588 and ASTM A709 (50W and HPS 50W grades). We also provide the corresponding grades.
