What Areas Belong to Zone 22 in the ATEX System?

Zone 22 is the most common and relatively lower-risk dust hazardous area. A combustible dust cloud is not likely to occur during normal operation, and if it does occur, it will only exist for a short time (for example during equipment failure or incomplete cleaning).

Typical real-world applications of Zone 22 include:

Storage warehouses for bagged powder materials
Areas surrounding silos and hoppers, and adjacent rooms (where dust is not normally released)
External areas of powder conveying systems
Packaging workshops with good dust control
Auxiliary production areas in feed, grain and building materials plants where dust dispersion is limited

These locations have a lower dust explosion risk, so equipment with less stringent (and usually more cost-effective) protection requirements can be used.

Quick comparison of the three dust zones:

Zone 20 — dust cloud continuous, long periods or frequent → Category 1D (Da) → Ex ta, IP6X
Zone 21 — dust cloud likely occasionally in normal operation → Category 2D (Db) → Ex tb, IP6X
Zone 22 — dust cloud only short-duration, abnormal conditions → Category 3D (Dc) → Ex tc, IP5X minimum

Lighting requirements for Zone 22:

Must use Category 3D equipment (Equipment Protection Level Dc)
The most common protection type is Ex tc (protection by enclosure, per IEC 60079-31). Note: Ex n types (nR, nA) belong to the gas Zone 2 system (IEC 60079-15) and are gas-zone markings, not dust-zone markings
Equipment enclosure must provide a minimum of IP5X dust protection (IP6X dust-tight is required for Zone 20/21 equipment)
Must also meet the applicable dust group (IIIA combustible flyings / IIIB non-conductive dust / IIIC conductive dust) and maximum surface temperature requirements — dust markings state a temperature value (e.g. T80 °C) instead of the T1–T6 classes used for gas
Higher protection level equipment (Category 2D / Db or 1D / Da) is always permitted
Fixed LED flood lights, linear lights, pendant lights and emergency lights are widely used in Zone 22

Important note:
Zone 22 accounts for the largest proportion of dust hazardous areas in most industrial plants. Selecting properly certified Zone 22 lights can meet safety requirements while effectively controlling costs.

To avoid over-engineering and unnecessary cost increases, SEEKINGLED has specially developed more cost-effective product series for Zone 2 and Zone 22 areas, including:

GS Series recessed gas station lights
FL8 Series flood lights
LU Series linear lights

These products meet ATEX / IECEx certification requirements while better matching the actual application scenarios of Zone 2 / Zone 22, helping customers effectively control project costs without compromising safety.

What Areas Belong to Zone 21 in the ATEX System?

Zone 21 is a higher-risk dust hazardous area. A combustible dust cloud is likely to occur regularly or frequently during normal operation, but is not continuously present.
Typical real-world applications of Zone 21 include:

Areas around bag filling and emptying stations for powders
Vicinity of powder sieving, screening and mixing equipment
Discharge points of silos, hoppers and conveyors
Local areas near mills, crushers and dust extraction systems where dust is released during normal use
Packaging and weighing areas for flour, sugar, starch, chemicals or pharmaceutical powders

In these locations, combustible dust is released regularly during normal production activities, so equipment with a higher protection level is required.
Lighting requirements for Zone 21:

Must use Category 2D equipment (Equipment Protection Level Db)
Common protection types: Ex tb, Ex ib, Ex mb, etc.
Higher protection level equipment (Category 1D / Da) is always permitted
Fixed explosion-proof pendant lights, flood lights and emergency lights are commonly used in Zone 21
Luminaires must also meet the correct dust group and temperature class requirements (usually T80°C or T95°C)

Important note:
Lights certified only for Zone 22 are not permitted in Zone 21. Always check the Ex marking on the product nameplate to confirm it includes Db or Category 2D.

To avoid over-engineering and unnecessary cost increases, SeekingLED has specially developed more cost-effective product series for Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas, including:

LO Series linear lights
Bay51 Series pendant lights
BAJ52 Series emergency lights
BAYD82 Series exit lights

These products meet ATEX / IECEx certification requirements while better matching the actual application scenarios of Zone 1 / Zone 21, helping customers effectively control project costs without compromising safety.

What Areas Belong to Zone 2 in the ATEX System?

Zone 2 is the most common gas hazardous area. An explosive atmosphere of gas, vapour or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation, and if it does occur, it will only exist for a short time (for example during a leak or equipment failure).
Typical real-world applications of Zone 2 include:

Well-ventilated storage areas for flammable liquids
Areas surrounding Zone 1 locations (the outer perimeter)
Pump rooms or process areas with good ventilation where releases are unlikely under normal conditions
Outdoor process units in oil & gas and chemical plants
Loading/unloading areas with effective vapour control systems
Battery charging rooms and some utility areas in industrial facilities
Common petrol station fueling areas (in most cases classified as Zone 2)

Because the probability of an explosive atmosphere is low, Zone 2 allows the use of less stringent (and usually more cost-effective) equipment compared with Zone 0 and Zone 1.
Lighting requirements for Zone 2:

Must use Category 3G equipment (Equipment Protection Level Gc)
Common protection types: Ex nR, Ex nA, Ex tc, Ex ec, etc.
Higher protection level equipment (Category 2G / Gb or 1G / Ga) is always permitted and often preferred for extra safety margin
Fixed LED flood lights, linear lights, high-bay lights and emergency lights are widely used in Zone 2
Still need to match the correct gas group (IIA/IIB/IIC) and temperature class (T1–T6)

Important note:
Zone 2 is by far the largest gas hazardous area in most industrial plants (often over 80% of all gas zones). Using properly certified Zone 2 lights can significantly reduce project cost while still meeting safety requirements.

To avoid over-engineering and unnecessary cost increases, SeekingLED has specially developed more cost-effective product series for Zone 2 and Zone 22 areas, including:

GS Series recessed gas station lights
FL8 Series flood lights
LU Series linear lights

These products meet ATEX / IECEx certification requirements while better matching the actual application scenarios of Zone 2 / Zone 22, helping customers effectively control project costs without compromising safety.

What Areas Belong to Zone 1 in the ATEX System?

Zone 1 is a higher-risk gas hazardous area. An explosive atmosphere of gas, vapour or mist is likely to occur regularly or frequently during normal operation, but is not continuously present. Compared with Zone 0, the risk level is slightly lower, yet equipment with a relatively high protection level is still required.
Typical real-world applications of Zone 1 include:

Areas around pump seals, valves and flanges in chemical plants
Vicinity of tanker and tank truck loading/unloading points
Sampling points and exhaust outlets of reactors, distillation columns and similar equipment
Areas in oil and gas processing units where releases may occur
Local areas in paint or solvent handling workshops
Local space around fuel dispensers at petrol stations (classified as Zone 1 in some countries or projects)

In these locations, flammable gases or vapours may be released during normal production, so explosion-proof electrical equipment that meets the required protection level must be used.
Lighting requirements for Zone 1:

Must use Category 2G equipment (Equipment Protection Level Gb)
Common protection types: Ex db (flameproof), Ex db eb mb, Ex e, etc.
Higher protection level equipment (Category 1G / Ga) may be used, but usually at higher cost
Fixed explosion-proof pendant lights, flood lights and emergency lights are widely applied in Zone 1
Luminaires must also meet the corresponding gas group (IIA/IIB/IIC) and temperature class (T1–T6) requirements

Important note:
Lights certified only for Zone 2 are not permitted in Zone 1. Always check the Ex marking on the product nameplate to confirm it includes Gb or Category 2G.
To avoid over-engineering and unnecessary cost increases, SeekingLED has specially developed more cost-effective product series for Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas, including:

LO Series linear lights
Bay51 Series pendant lights
BAJ52 Series emergency lights
BAYD82 Series exit lights

What Areas Belong to Zone 20 in the ATEX System?
Zone 20 is the highest-risk dust explosion hazardous area. A combustible dust cloud is present continuously or for long periods in the air. Once ignited, it can cause a severe dust explosion.
Typical real-world applications include:

Inside grain, flour or animal feed silos
Inside powder conveying pipes and elevators for sugar, starch, milk powder, etc.
Enclosed chambers of mills, crushers and screening equipment
Some powder storage and process vessels in chemical and pharmaceutical plants

These locations have high dust concentration and confined spaces. Personnel entry requires a confined space permit and thorough cleaning and gas testing.
Lighting selection points:

Must meet Category 1D (EPL Da)
Prefer intrinsically safe (Ex ia) or other protection methods confirmed to meet Da level
Standard Ex tb flameproof lights used for Zone 21/22 cannot be used directly in Zone 20
Fixed high-power Zone 20 luminaires are rare on the market. In practice, most needs are met by intrinsically safe portable lights or inspection lights

A higher protection level is always allowed; a lower level is strictly prohibited.
SeekingLED’s current products mainly cover Zone 1, 2, 21 and 22. Intrinsically safe portable lighting suitable for Zone 20 is planned for launch in 2027.
