Why are cracks in concrete pavements often transverse?
As concrete hardens, it undergoes drying shrinkage and thermal movement, while the pavement slab is also restrained by the underlying base. When this movement is restricted, tensile stress can build up and lead to transverse cracking.
But remember: a transverse crack does not automatically mean a pavement defect.
Transverse contraction joints are intentionally designed to provide a controlled location for concrete movement.
When evaluating a crack, look at:
🔹 Is it located at the designed joint?
🔹 Were the saw-cut timing and depth appropriate?
🔹 Are there signs of faulting, spalling, edge damage or loss of support?
The direction of a crack is only part of the story. Understanding the cause is what really matters.
