Laser Welding a 10 mm Steel Plate with a Gap — Can It Still Achieve a Clean Weld?

Laser welding is often associated with high precision and clean welds. But when two flat steel plates have a gap between them, achieving stable pe*******on and a uniform weld becomes much more challenging.

In a recent application demonstration for our Russian customer, XARP demonstrated robotic laser welding on 10 mm thick steel plates with a gap between the plates.

The result:

✓ Smooth and uniform weld seam
✓ Stable fusion across the joint
✓ Strong and reliable connection
✓ Clean appearance with controlled heat input

Compared with welding geometries where the surfaces are already closely matched, gap welding requires much tighter control of laser position, welding parameters, and process stability.
