A chainsaw is the natural first choice for a large root. In clean, accessible wood it performs well.

In the ground, the environment changes completely...

Soil contains grit, sand and stone. These work against the chain on every stroke. A chain built for wood fibre dulls quickly in this environment, and a single buried stone can cause immediate damage. Kickback risk also increases when the bar is operating at ground level in confined positions.

Standard cordless reciprocating saws present similar challenges. A single blade flexes under lateral pressure in dense material, binding rather than cutting through.

Our latest guide covers what specifically goes wrong below soil level, and what a tool designed from the start for in-ground cutting, the ARBORTECH ALLSAW BA200X does differently.

Service & Support. Built to Last. πŸ’ͺ

Not every job through the workshop needs a big repair.

This Seddon Johnson generator was originally built by us in 1998 and came back in for a service. Twenty-eight years later, a full service was all it needed, and the Honda engine fired first pull.

It is a good reminder of what proper engineering, regular maintenance and reliable engines can do.

Now serviced, checked over and ready to go back out to work.

If you have equipment that needs a service, parts or technical advice, speak to your local branch or the sales team.

Cutting in the ground is one of the tougher jobs on a landscaping site.

Chainsaws are built for clean wood, not soil. One buried stone can quickly damage a chain. Standard reciprocating saws can struggle in dense material, while mattocks and root axes are slow, labour-intensive and hard on the operator.

For landscapers, greenkeepers and arborists, root cutting, turf cutting and buried timber work all come with the same challenge: finding a cleaner, more controlled way to cut in awkward ground conditions.

Our latest guide looks at the real challenges of in-ground cutting, what tends to fail, what the Arbortech ALLSAW BA200X does differently, and which blade suits which job.

Its STIHL Sunday πŸ™Œ

Spring is a key time for cutting back, shaping and keeping trees and taller growth under control, and the STIHL HTA range is well suited to the job.

Pole pruners like the HTA 135 give you the reach needed for higher branches without compromising on control, making them a practical option for general grounds maintenance, property upkeep and wider seasonal tidy-up work.

It is the sort of equipment that comes into its own at this time of year, when customers are looking to deal with winter overgrowth, carry out selective pruning and get outdoor spaces back into shape for the months ahead. πŸ’ͺ

As with any professional tool, keeping it properly maintained matters. Sharp cutting attachments, correct setup and regular servicing all make a difference when it comes to performance, safety and reliability.

If you are considering a STIHL pole pruner or want support with servicing your existing machine, speak to the team at Seddon Plant & Engineers Ltd. πŸ’»πŸ“ž
