🎉 Have you heard the news? 🎉

The Sykes-Pickavant Archive documentation is now being preserved by the British Motor Museum alongside a selection of our tools that will be featured in their public displays later this year 🙌

Here are a few behind-the-scenes moments from when the team at the British Motor Museum visited to explore the incredible history, documentation, and tools we’ve preserved over more than a century of innovation.

This is such a proud moment for all of us at Sykes-Pickavant, recognising the importance of our heritage within the British motor industry and helping to preserve it for future generations.

We’re incredibly excited to see the display come to life later this year, and we can’t wait to share more soon 👀

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this possible 👏

🔧 Seized spigot bearing? There’s an easier way. 🔧

Designed to remove damaged or seized bearings in confined spaces where slide hammers can be difficult to use, this tool helps make the job:
✔ Easier
✔ Faster
✔ Safer

Plus, there’s no need for a die grinder, saving even more time on clean-up.

Suitable for Ford Transit / Ranger applications, along with a wide range of Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen models where space allows.

Check out this video that Jack Spanners recently shared of our Spigot Bearing Tool in action!

Guess the tool… answer revealed 🔧

Thanks to everyone who had a go, here’s what it is 👇

It’s a J.W. Pickavant Reciprocating Valve Grinder - Part No. 168.

This version of the tool first appeared in the 1964 catalogue (with earlier designs going back to 1938), showing how it developed over time.

Valve grinders (or valve lappers) are believed to be some of the very first tools in the Pickavant range, dating right back to the start of the business in 1918.

What’s really interesting is the box 👀 Even though it’s a J.W. Pickavant tool, it’s in a plain Sykes-Pickavant box, meaning it was likely sold after the 1968 merger.

A great example of how the two brands overlapped during that period 🔧

Still using traditional coolant exchange methods?

With deep vacuum technology, coolant can be removed and replaced in minutes — saving up to 25 minutes compared to traditional methods 👇

✔ Faster coolant exchange
✔ Helps reduce air pockets
✔ Less purge time after exchange

A cleaner, more efficient process from start to finish.

What’s inside the boxes? 📦👀

We’ve finally taken the lids off our latest SP Archive donation… and what a collection it is 🔧

These tools came from a family-run motor spares and repair shop in Chingford, London, which operated from the 1970s through to the early 1990s. The owner, a former RAF Radio Technician, could turn his hand to almost anything, repairing cars, boat engines, lawn mowers and even, on one occasion, a hang glider!

The workshop itself sounded unforgettable: model planes hanging from the ceiling, shelves packed with tools and spare parts, and what looked like complete chaos to everyone except the man who knew exactly where every bolt, fuse and spanner lived.

Known for doing things properly, he took huge pride in his work and believed firmly in quality craftsmanship, “buy cheap, buy twice” was a phrase he lived by. Many of these tools were so well cared for that they remained stored away in their original boxes for more than 30 years after the shop closed.

We’re incredibly proud that these tools have now found a home within the SP Archive, helping preserve the story and legacy of a skilled craftsman whose knowledge and dedication clearly left a lasting impression on those around him.

More to come soon… including our “Guess the Tool” series 👀
