A doorway is never experienced from one side alone.

From one room, the door may sit alongside panelling, cabinetry or a particular material palette. Turn around and the same opening could be meeting completely different finishes, lighting and architectural details.

That is why both sides deserve equal consideration.

Reviewing the doorway from each adjoining space can help ensure the door style, finish and surrounding detail feel intentional in both directions, rather than perfectly resolved from one viewpoint and disconnected from the other.

Which side of a doorway usually gets more attention in your designs?

A doorway can influence more than movement between rooms.

With a metal-framed glazed pocket door, the opening can also become part of the way light moves through the home. Instead of closing one room off with a solid barrier, glazing allows natural light to pass between adjoining spaces while still giving the option to separate them when needed.

This can be particularly effective in layouts where one room receives stronger natural light and the next would benefit from borrowing some of it.

In that context, the door is not only a dividing element. It becomes part of the wider lighting strategy of the interior.

A strong detail can begin clearly on the drawing and still change by the time the room is finished.

Between design, specification, construction and final finishing, several people may influence the doorway. Small decisions around positioning, hardware, finishes or surrounding details can gradually move the completed result away from the original intent.

Keeping that intent clear throughout the project gives everyone a stronger reference point and helps protect the quality of the finished opening.

For designers, it is not only about specifying the right product. It is about communicating what the completed detail is meant to achieve.

A new style has joined the Portman pocket door range.

Our metal-framed glazed pocket doors bring a more architectural feel to the opening, while still offering the flexibility of a door that disappears neatly into the wall.

In this before and after, replacing the original door changes the relationship between the living room and kitchen. When open, the pocket door creates a cleaner transition between the two spaces. When closed, the glazed frame provides a defined boundary without feeling visually heavy.

Some walls deserve to lead the room.

Panelling, specialist finishes, fitted joinery or carefully placed artwork can all give a wall its own architectural presence. In those spaces, the doorway should support the composition rather than compete with it.

A Portman Pocket Door can sit more quietly within the design. When open, it slides into the wall rather than remaining visible across the face of it, helping the wider elevation stay clean and considered.

The result is a doorway that works with the room while allowing the wall to remain the focal point.

Working on a scheme where panelling, joinery or a feature wall needs to remain uninterrupted? Talk to our team about a pocket door solution that works around the wider design: https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0yK36n0

A metal-framed door does not need to dominate the room.

With our new metal-framed pocket door range, designers have more freedom to choose a finish that works with the wider interior rather than automatically creating a strong contrast.

The frame can pick up tones already used in cabinetry, complement other architectural details, or sit more quietly within the surrounding materials.

The aim is not to make everything match. It is to make the door feel considered as part of the overall scheme.

Material choices have a significant influence on how cohesive a room feels.

A Portman Pocket Door can be specified in a finish that relates to other elements within the space, such as cabinetry, shelving or bespoke joinery. Rather than matching every surface exactly, using complementary materials can create a stronger visual connection across the room.

This helps the door feel integrated into the wider scheme, with each finish contributing to a consistent and considered design language.

Floor-to-ceiling pocket doors can create cleaner architectural lines and more continuous interior spaces.

Extending an opening towards the ceiling can strengthen vertical proportions, reduce visual interruption and create a more continuous relationship between adjoining rooms. Achieving that effect depends on how the opening, wall and ceiling details are considered together.

This article explores what architects and specifiers should consider when specifying floor-to-ceiling pocket doors and why they should be viewed as engineered systems rather than standalone products.

The height of a door opening can influence far more than access between rooms.

Tall sliding doors can strengthen architectural lines, improve spatial flow and create a greater sense of openness throughout an interior. When integrated as part of a pocket door system, they become an important part of the overall architectural composition.

This article explores how tall pocket doors influence spatial proportion and what should be considered when specifying larger-format openings.

An ensuite pocket door specification can involve much more than finding a way to save space.

On this residential project, a hinged door would have interfered with the sanitaryware, but the alternative also needed to cope with the heat and humidity created by the shower.

There was another consideration behind the finished surface. The pocket wall formed one side of the shower enclosure, so the wall build-up needed to accommodate the tiled finish without compromising the cavity where the door operates.

The solution combined a Portman P7300 G system with metal jambs and a fully glazed door leaf, alongside a reinforced construction using plywood beneath the AquaBoard and tiles.

The result was a space-efficient ensuite with a clean finish and a door system designed around the demands of the room.
