📸 | Here at Longwood Quarry, we have started the next phase of our journey - which is 'restoring' the North West corner of the site, following stone extraction ⛏
'Restoration' is when land is prepared to return as a green space, supporting local wildlife and their habitats. We're restoring areas of the quarry as soon as they have been worked, rather than waiting until extraction has completed ceased.
But what exactly does this involve? 🤔
♻️ Reshaping and landscaping worked areas so they blend into the surrounding countryside
🌳 Carefully replacing soils to support future habitats
🪻 Seeding with limestone-friendly grasses, flowers and native plants
🦋 Monitoring how nature responds - every new plant or butterfly counts!
But why now? 💭
💚 Bare or disturbed land starts turning green sooner
🐝 Wildlife can return while the quarry is still operating
😍 It keeps the site tidy, better managed and attractive
💪 It protects soils against erosion and encourages natural processes to start straight away
We've already seen wildlife making a return, with Deer 🦌 now using the woodland areas, Brown Hares in the open grass-restored areas, a family of ducks 🦆 on one of our new water-edges and birds of prey circling above 🦅 as they hunt the small mammals and insects which are returning to the habitat.
