Apprenticeship Project 2025

Over the Easter holidays, Makefast set their current apprentices, who are studying at both Level 2 and Level 3, a practical project: to design and build a small parts counting machine.

The apprentices were divided into two teams, each led by Jake and Sam, who are due to complete their qualifications this summer.

Each team was responsible for planning, building, and evaluating the machine’s performance, as well as identifying and detailing potential improvements. The students enjoyed the experience and appreciated the opportunity to take ownership of the project while working independently.

Apprenticeship Week Spotlight: Chris’ Journey at Makefast Group

This Apprenticeship Week, we are highlighting Chris’ journey from an apprentice to Senior Planner.

“I began my journey at Makefast Ltd as an apprentice 10 years ago, starting at Level 2 and progressing all the way to Level 6. I completed my apprenticeship with a First-Class Honours degree in Industrial Engineering, specialising in Engineering Management.

Throughout my time at Makefast, I’ve gained invaluable experience by working across multiple departments, including design, purchasing, production, and now planning. For the past three years, I’ve held the role of Senior Planner, a position I have found both challenging and rewarding.

I chose to become an apprentice because it offered the perfect balance of earning while learning, allowing me to gain hands-on experience while furthering my education. Makefast Ltd provided me with the opportunity to explore a diverse range of manufacturing processes, all of which have been instrumental in shaping my career and expertise in the engineering field.”

Apprenticeship Week Spotlight: Jen’s Journey at Makefast Group

At Makefast Group, we are committed to nurturing talent through apprenticeships, providing individuals with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while achieving industry-recognised qualifications. This Apprenticeship Week, we are highlighting Jen Owen’s journey from apprentice to Production Data Controller.

“An apprenticeship has always appealed to me because it allows you to gain qualifications and job experience without accumulating student debt—in fact, you earn while you learn. It also provides a smooth transition from education to the workplace.

I started my apprenticeship by attending college three days a week and working at Makefast two days a week, which helped me gradually adjust from a learning environment to a working one.

Transitioning from education to work with no prior experience can be daunting, but with an apprenticeship, you're hired knowing you have no work experience, and you're there to gain it.

I knew I wanted to pursue engineering through an apprenticeship but wasn’t sure which specific career path would suit me best. Fortunately, Makefast offers an apprenticeship that benefits both the apprentice and the company, providing experience in multiple areas so you can discover what career path you enjoy. They helped me develop my job experience, education, and confidence.

As of June 2025, I will have been at Makefast for 10 years, gained my apprenticeship qualifications, achieved a distinction in my Manufacturing Engineering HND, and now hold the role of ‘Production Data Controller.’

I still apply the experience I gained from various departments at Makefast every day, and I look forward to continuing my growth at every opportunity. From my experience, I would highly recommend an apprenticeship as a fantastic way to start your career.”

Apprenticeship Week Spotlight: Stuart’s Journey at Makefast Group

This Apprenticeship Week, we are highlighting Stuart’s journey from HND apprentice to Technical Director.

“I took an apprenticeship with the Shared Apprentice Scheme. This involved gaining real work experience and earning a wage at the same time, working across various workshops and design offices in the area, including Makefast, whilst also continuing my education.

The apprenticeship gave me a real-life engineering background, working with experienced technicians, and also provided me with the social skills needed for day-to-day workplace interactions.

Makefast's apprenticeship offered me a great opportunity to develop all aspects of my engineering knowledge. Being a compact company, I was working on real projects immediately, both on the shop floor and in the design office. During my apprenticeship at Makefast, I worked on product design, machine design, and tool design.

Makefast offers in-house and external training to support career progression. Makefast also gave me the opportunity to travel with the yacht products, visiting most of Europe and the USA during my time in the design office. Additionally, Makefast gave me the opportunity to work alongside experienced salesmen, providing me with guidance on speaking and dealing directly with customers.

From Junior Designer/Apprentice, I worked my way up to one of the lead designers in the office on the luxury yacht side of the business. Over time, I became involved in more specialist products required for the very high end of the market. Makefast gave my colleague and me the space to develop a separate department and, ultimately, a separate company, where I am now a Technical Director.”

Apprenticeship Week Spotlight: Merly’s Journey at Makefast

Meet Merly Hipgrave, a Design Engineer Apprentice at Makefast Group. Her journey started at college in Newtown, where she pursued a Level 2 qualification before progressing through Myrick Training to Level 3 and further. She has now achieved a Merit in Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering.

Her advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship? Try different paths before making a decision. Merly initially considered a career in nursing and even explored teaching before discovering her passion for engineering. Now, she loves what she does and encourages others to gain hands-on experience through work placements and apprenticeships.

At Makefast Group, we’re committed to supporting apprentices like Merly in building successful careers. Interested in exploring apprenticeship opportunities with us? Find out more: www.makefast.com/career
