I've had this circa 1880 7-string banjo knocking around for ages. I've decided to get it up and running and learn some 7 strings tunes (god knows why, it takes me long enough to learn 5 string stuff).
It was sold by Edward Withers of Leicester Square. A highly reputable violin shop. I wonder what they thought about selling these crude new fangled instruments... a fad that will surely pass... 20 years later, banjos are more popular than ever!

A little while ago someone sent me this unfinished project. A neck chopped from a cheapo uke and a gourd, and asked me if I could finish it.
So I cut off the heel and fitted an extension to the neck, chopped the gourd and fitted a skin, made a tailpiece out of wenge and a maple bridge, made a new ebony nut. I sprayed it all black with a couple of coats of TruOil.
Here we are with a cute little gourdulele.
