With temperatures forecast to exceed 25°C this week, please take extra care when mixing and applying grouts and mortars.
⚠️ Many manufacturers recommend avoiding the application of cementitious and resin based grouts during hot weather, particularly when temperatures exceed 20°C. However, we know work still needs to continue. The key is adapting your methods to minimise rapid setting and reduced working times.
☀️ 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫: If the air temperature is 25°C, your paving could easily be 30–35°C+ in direct sunlight.
👇 𝟏𝟎 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞:
🌅 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐬
Grout super early in the morning or later in the afternoon / early evening. You must avoid the hottest part of the day.
📋 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐭
Always check product limitations and temperature guidance before use.
💦 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐩
Lightly mist paving before and during application to prevent rapid moisture loss, and to stop your grout sticking to the surface of your slabs.
🚿 𝐏𝐫𝐞-𝐒𝐨𝐚𝐤 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠
Particularly important with sandstone and absorbent materials. Remove any standing water with a leaf blower before grouting.
🌳 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐈𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐞
Hot bags = faster setting products. Keep materials out of direct sunlight.
🧊 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫
Use the coldest water available. Keep it shaded and add ice if necessary to reduce mix temperatures.
🪣 𝐌𝐢𝐱 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐠 𝐀𝐭 𝐀 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞
Only mix what you can comfortably use within the reduced working time.
🔄 𝐌𝐢𝐱 𝐎𝐧 𝐀 𝐋𝐨𝐰 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝
Mixing generates heat. The faster and longer you mix, the more heat you put into the products particularly Flowpoint (mix at the lower end 3 mins), accelerating setting times.
🚨 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲
Keep a hose or pressure washer nearby. In hot conditions, grout may need cleaning off sooner than usual.
📅 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝
Have materials, labour and equipment ready before mixing. In hot weather, every minute counts. Try to have at least two people on the job.
🔥 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭
If the paving feels hot to the touch, the grout will feel it too. Keep materials cool, use cold water, work in smaller areas and expect products to set much faster than normal.
