Painting galvanised metal? The secret isn’t the topcoat, it’s the preparation.

Galvanised steel is designed to resist corrosion, but that also makes it difficult for paint to stick. Skip the preparation and you could end up with flaking or peeling paint.

In our latest guide, we walk you through the complete system for achieving a durable, long lasting finish:

✅ Clean with Degreaser
✅ Etch with Mordant Solution
✅ Prime with Zinc Phosphate Primer
✅ Finish with two coats of an appropriate metal paint like Hammercote.

Whether you’re painting gates, railings, cladding or structural steel, following the correct process makes all the difference.

Four generations. 118 years. One family business.

This week was a special moment at Teal & Mackrill.

Geoff Mackrill was joined by his children, Ben Mackrill and Frances Mackrill, who both now play an active role in the business. Frances also brought along her six month old twins, Rory and Leo.

Making the photo even more special is the portrait in the background of our founder, Harold Mackrill, and Geoff’s father, Ben Mackrill, a reminder of the generations that have shaped the company into what it is today.

Since 1908, Teal & Mackrill has remained an independent, family-owned British manufacturer, with each generation building on the foundations laid by those before them.

Will Rory and Leo one day become the fifth generation? Only time will tell, but it’s wonderful to think that the story may continue.

We’re incredibly proud of our heritage, but even more excited about our future continuing to manufacture in Hull, invest in innovation, and build on a legacy that has stood for well over a century.

Here’s to the generations past, present, and those still to come.
