2026, Verona. The biggest natural stone fair in the world, and one of the best roofing lessons of the year.

Natural slate, laid the traditional Genoese way and in a diamond pattern. Each slate hangs on hooks on timber battens, with no nails through the stone, so it can move and be replaced one by one.

Our view as waterproofing specialists: slate is the rain screen. It sheds the water, but what keeps the house dry is the membrane underneath. A beautiful roof is always two layers.

A ventilated façade does two jobs at once.

The one everyone sees: insulation stays dry, the wall breathes, the building survives salt and humidity on the coast.

The one nobody talks about: the sub-frame takes every deviation of the structure. Brackets are set out to a level, not to the concrete — the uneven parapet and the wall out of plumb stay behind the panels.

What the street sees is a flat plane, straight joints and a corner that holds the line.

Measure twice, cut once. On a façade you measure a lot more than twice.

A panel cut two millimetres short cannot be put back — the sheet goes to waste, and the joint line above it goes with it.

So the tape comes before the saw: every opening, every corner, every height taken from the wall that actually exists, not from the drawing.

One cut per sheet. That is why the finished wall reads as straight lines and sharp corners.

Bitumen waterproofing: an old material that still earns its place

Torch-applied bitumen membranes are the oldest waterproofing technology still in daily use, and on paper they lose to modern systems on almost every line — elasticity, UV resistance, service life.

And yet on Cyprus roofs they keep working. The condition is simple and it is never about the material: follow the manufacturer's instructions, do not cut corners on the process, and treat the seams and the upstands as the main work rather than the finishing touch.

Every overlap fully torched and rolled, every parapet detail dressed and sealed, primer where the datasheet asks for it, no shortcuts on the number of layers.

Done that way, a bitumen roof gives 5 to 7 years of reliable service in the Cyprus climate — and that is an honest, cost-effective answer for a lot of projects.

A parking deck is not a floor you walk on. It carries cars, so the slab above the membrane is built to a different standard than a screed indoors.

1. The edge strip goes down first, around the whole perimeter — 80 m of it here. The slab has to be free to move against the walls; a slab cast tight into a parapet cracks at the corners in the first summer.

2. Two layers of mesh, not one. Wheel loads are point loads that move; a single layer at mid-depth does not hold the top surface together under them.

3. Every service, sleeve and duct is set before the pour. Once 200 mm of concrete is down, adding one pipe means cutting the deck open — and cutting the deck open means opening the waterproofing under it.

4. C25/30 with polypropylene fibre, 270 m², about 61 m³, placed and levelled by hand over the mesh. The fibre works against early shrinkage cracking, which is what you get on an open deck under a Cyprus sun.

Everything above the membrane is replaceable. This layer decides how the deck behaves for the next thirty years.

Under a parking deck there are 1.5 mm that decide everything.

This roof is designed to carry cars. Everything above the membrane is replaceable - the membrane itself is not: once the slab is cast, it is buried for the life of the building.

1. Reinforced PVC membrane, 1.5 mm, to EN 13956 and CE marked. Rolled across the full deck, seams hot-air welded, laps checked while they are still open.

2. Perimeter and upstands fixed with a compression bar. This is where flat roofs leak first - not in the field, but where the membrane turns up a wall.

3. Internal and external corners and the parapet outlets are detailed by hand, one by one. On this deck: 12 corners and 2 parapet outlets, each closed before anything went on top.

4. The whole field is inspected before the reinforcement arrives. After that day nobody sees this layer again - the design life of the system is 30 years and it has to run without a single visit.

Waterproofing is not the layer you see. It is the layer you never get to look at twice.
