🛠️ From a dream of one year ago… to a living instrument.

One year ago, Armando Bertozzi brought me this Remo TI timpano head and asked: “Do you think we can make something cool with it?”
Today I’m delivering this handmade Gong Drum built specifically for him.

Technical details:
1.5 mm aluminum shell with multilayer wood reinforcements on both bearing edges
Hand-hammered center for improved resonance
Shell height: 25 cm (≈ 10″)
Maple and birch hoops
12 tension rods for precise and even tuning
Partial handmade brass spiral snares (activated as a mute, with wires resting on the head for a few cm)
Additional adjustable mute
Legs made of solid 1 cm (10 mm) steel, ready to be cut to the exact height requested by Armando
A project born from a simple request that turned into a unique instrument — a hybrid between a timpano and a gong drum, with original artisanal solutions.

From raw sheet to pure music. 🔨✨
The secret to taming stainless steel is embracing its physics, not fighting them.
For this new custom 20" Ride by Fiore Drums, we started from a raw sheet of 304 stainless steel, manually cut to a perfect circle. The real technical challenge was shaping the bell and dialing in a low profile. Stainless steel has a much higher elastic modulus and springback than bronze: pushing the profile down constantly risks work-hardening (incrudimento) the metal, which would deaden the sound completely. The breakthrough? Precise geometric hand-hammering, a light surface lathing to clean up the frequencies, and a final flame-tempering treatment. This crucial step fully relaxes the molecular tensions built up during hammering and yields this stunning, iridescent golden patina. The payoff is a defined stick ping, a piercing bell, and a dark, buttery, crashable character. Craftsmanship evolved. 🥁🔥

From Wooding to Ludwig: transformed restoration of the 26x14" bass drum for my friend Simone Alberti! 🥁

For my friend Simone Alberti I completed a full transformative restoration on this original Wooding 26x14" poplar bass drum.
The goal was to turn it into a proper Ludwig-style bass drum: original Ludwig hardware, maple veneer on hoops and shell.
The shell was oversized, so I created a single external-shoulder bearing edge to perfectly seat the head. I sealed all the old holes and drilled new ones aligned to the exact Ludwig lug spacing. Inside I applied the classic Ludwig white finish for that authentic vintage touch.
Result? A powerful and elegant beast.
Happy friend, reborn drum. ❤️

I fondly recall the early exercises in Gene Krupa's method book, particularly the use of the inclined practice pad, specifically designed to facilitate the learning of the traditional grip. The carefully chosen angle allowed the left hand to adopt a natural position, promoting proper rebound control and the development of a smooth, swinging touch.
I decided to recreate this object using salvaged materials: two scraps of spruce wood, carefully cut and assembled to achieve the same inclination. The playing surface consists of a 6 mm thick black rubber layer with excellent grip, finished with the Fiore Drums logo.
This handcrafted practice pad faithfully recreates the original feel from back then. A small tribute to Gene Krupa and to the method that shaped generations of drummers.
