From Wooding to Ludwig: transformed restoration of the 26x14" bass drum for my friend Simone Alberti! 🥁

For my friend Simone Alberti I completed a full transformative restoration on this original Wooding 26x14" poplar bass drum.
The goal was to turn it into a proper Ludwig-style bass drum: original Ludwig hardware, maple veneer on hoops and shell.
The shell was oversized, so I created a single external-shoulder bearing edge to perfectly seat the head. I sealed all the old holes and drilled new ones aligned to the exact Ludwig lug spacing. Inside I applied the classic Ludwig white finish for that authentic vintage touch.
Result? A powerful and elegant beast.
Happy friend, reborn drum. ❤️

I fondly recall the early exercises in Gene Krupa's method book, particularly the use of the inclined practice pad, specifically designed to facilitate the learning of the traditional grip. The carefully chosen angle allowed the left hand to adopt a natural position, promoting proper rebound control and the development of a smooth, swinging touch.
I decided to recreate this object using salvaged materials: two scraps of spruce wood, carefully cut and assembled to achieve the same inclination. The playing surface consists of a 6 mm thick black rubber layer with excellent grip, finished with the Fiore Drums logo.
This handcrafted practice pad faithfully recreates the original feel from back then. A small tribute to Gene Krupa and to the method that shaped generations of drummers.

First handmade conical drums, all 6-ply birch, 30° edges, unique sizes:
Bass 18/16×14" – Floor tom 14/13×14" – Tom 12/10×8" – Snare 14/13×5.5"
Hand-applied turquoise glitter exterior, silver coat interior.

Custom snare masterpiece: This 14" Ludwig Classic Maple tom was fully converted into a deep 14x7 snare – built precisely to the specs from my good friend and drummer Simone Alberti! 🥁🔥
We started with the warm, vintage maple shell (complete with Ludwig's classic white Reso-Coat interior finish for resonance and protection), then added 4mm maple reinforcement rings internally as requested for extra stability, focus, and punch. Full build: snare beds cut and sanded, Puresound wires fitted, throw-off and butt plate installed, fresh heads tuned perfectly... resulting in a thick, cracking snare with killer projection, sustain, and that low-end growl – spot-on for rock, metal, funk, or aggressive grooves.
