*Soil Testing and Bearing Capacity*
Soil testing is one of the most important aspects of building construction, yet it is often overlooked by many clients. Determining the soil's bearing capacity is crucial because it directly affects the safety, stability, and durability of a structure. While soil testing is highly recommended for all buildings, it becomes especially critical for multi-storey buildings exceeding two or three floors.
There are different types of soil, including red soil, black cotton soil, murram, sandy soil, and clay soils. Each type has a different bearing capacity, ranging from weak to strong. For example, black cotton soil is generally considered problematic due to its expansion and contraction during wet and dry seasons, while well-compacted murram and certain red soils often provide better support for foundations.
