TO MY FELLOW SURVEYORS: LET'S MASTER THE BASICS TOGETHER!

As surveyors, understanding how to read a level staff is one of the foundational skills that shapes our accuracy and confidence on the field.

Here’s a simple guide for those still learning or brushing up:

1️⃣ Know Your Staff – It’s marked in meters (e.g. 1.425 m) and divided into small increments (usually 5mm or 1cm). Master reading these accurately.

2️⃣ Set Up Your Auto Level Properly – Make sure it’s well-leveled, then sight your staff clearly.

3️⃣ Take the Correct Reading – The center crosshair gives your height. Note it carefully!

4️⃣ Record as BS, IS, or FS – Always label your readings:
- BS (Backsight): From known point
- IS (Intermediate): Between points
- FS (Foresight): Final point of that setup

5️⃣ Practice Often – Begin on level ground, then challenge yourself on slopes.

Pro Tip: Learn to spot and avoid common mistakes like misreading the wrong division.

We grow stronger when we help each other.

RISK OF PLACING WATER TANK DIRECTLY ON ROOF !!

Placing a water tank directly on a roof is dangerous because it adds excessive weight to a structure not designed for it, which can lead to structural failure or collapse.

Other dangers include leaks and dampness on the roof and ceiling below, poor water pressure if the tank is too low, and potential damage to the tank from an uneven or sharp surface.

A proper tank stand is the safer alternative, as it distributes the weight and allows for a stable, level base.

Take precautions on this especially for residential buildings..!

A steel truss roof is a structural system made of interconnected steel members that form a series of triangles. This design provides excellent strength, stability, and long spans, making it a popular choice for various buildings. Here's an overview of common types:

Common Types of Steel Truss Roofs

King Post Truss:

Description: This is one of the simplest truss designs, featuring a central vertical post (the king post) and two angled struts that connect the base of the post to the top corners of the truss.

Application: Often used for smaller spans and lighter loads, such as residential roofs or small commercial buildings.

Queen Post Truss:

Description: An evolution of the king post, it uses two vertical posts (queen posts) and a horizontal tie beam connecting their tops. It can span wider openings than a king post truss.

Application: Suitable for medium spans, commonly found in larger residential homes, barns, and some commercial structures.

Visual:

Pratt Truss:

Description: Characterized by vertical members in compression and diagonal members in tension. This design is efficient and widely used. The diagonal members slant towards the center of the span.

Application: Very common in bridges and long-span roofs for industrial buildings, warehouses, and auditoriums due to its efficiency in handling various loads.

Visual:

Howe Truss:

Description: The opposite of the Pratt truss, with vertical members in tension and diagonal members in compression. The diagonal members slant away from the center.

Application: Historically popular for bridges, but also used in long-span roofs, especially where heavy loads need to be supported.

Fink Truss:

Description: One of the most common light-steel roof trusses. It features a W-shaped web pattern within the triangular outline, providing a strong and economical solution for sloping roofs.

Application: Widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings with pitched roofs, offering good l
