TO MY FELLOW SURVEYORS: LET'S MASTER THE BASICS TOGETHER!
As surveyors, understanding how to read a level staff is one of the foundational skills that shapes our accuracy and confidence on the field.
Here’s a simple guide for those still learning or brushing up:
1️⃣ Know Your Staff – It’s marked in meters (e.g. 1.425 m) and divided into small increments (usually 5mm or 1cm). Master reading these accurately.
2️⃣ Set Up Your Auto Level Properly – Make sure it’s well-leveled, then sight your staff clearly.
3️⃣ Take the Correct Reading – The center crosshair gives your height. Note it carefully!
4️⃣ Record as BS, IS, or FS – Always label your readings:
- BS (Backsight): From known point
- IS (Intermediate): Between points
- FS (Foresight): Final point of that setup
5️⃣ Practice Often – Begin on level ground, then challenge yourself on slopes.
Pro Tip: Learn to spot and avoid common mistakes like misreading the wrong division.
We grow stronger when we help each other.
