Smoke doesn’t need a large gap to spread from one compartment to another. Even a pencil-sized opening can allow smoke to migrate rapidly, reducing visibility and creating dangerous conditions.
In this example, smoke passing through an opening of only ≈ 7 mm can obscure a 6 m × 6 m × 6 m room in approximately 3 minutes and 40 seconds.
