🧱 Common Mistakes When Applying Silicone

A bad silicone joint usually comes down to these simple mistakes 👇

1️⃣ Removing too much silicone while tooling
If you take off too much and try to add more immediately, it won’t bond properly — silicone should only be applied to a dry surface.

✅ Instead:
Remove the joint completely using a 90° scraper or edge tool, let it dry, then reapply.

2️⃣ Applying silicone over old silicone
Layering silicone on top of silicone doesn’t create a proper bond and can lead to failure later.

3️⃣ Poor surface preparation
If the area isn’t cleaned and degreased properly, the silicone won’t adhere correctly.

4️⃣ Using your finger instead of a tool
It may work occasionally, but you won’t achieve a clean, even, professional finish across the whole joint.

Good prep + the right tools = long-lasting silicone joints.

🧱 How to Choose the Right Grout Float

The right grout float makes cleaning easier and helps protect your tiles 👇

Today’s grouts are usually very fine, so the main rule is: the smoother the float, the cleaner the finish.

Here are the main types:

🔹 Standard rubber float — reliable for general use
🔹 Rounded corner float — perfect for corners, helps avoid catching edges
🔹 Soft rubber float (Quick System) — glides smoothly and is safer for delicate or glossy tiles

💡 For polished or sensitive surfaces, always choose a soft rubber float.

There’s also the classic black rubber float — excellent for glossy tiles, but only when brand new. Once grout dries in the pores, it can become rough and scratch the surface.

⚠️ Always test on a spare tile first before grouting delicate finishes.

Right float = cleaner joints and safer tiles.

🧱 How to Apply Silicone Properly

A clean silicone joint is all about preparation and control 👇

The purpose of silicone is simple — to seal joints and stop water from getting under or between tiles.

Start by cleaning the surface with a dedicated detergent. This helps create a strong bond and prevents contamination.

Next, apply the silicone evenly and use a silicone finishing tool to shape the joint. Different corners of the tool give you different joint sizes and profiles — here we use the size 4 corner.

💡 Important tip:
When smoothing, keep the same angle throughout the movement for a clean, even finish.

Why use detergent?
It prevents silicone from sticking where it shouldn’t, making the joint smoother and easier to finish.

Let it dry — and the seal is done.

🧱 How to Smooth a Wall After Skim Coating

Rolled the skim coat on? Now it’s time to smooth it properly 👇

Use a stainless steel spatula with a replaceable blade. It speeds up the process and helps you work the material evenly without fighting it.

💡 Important tip:
Don’t drag the tool all the way down the wall. At the bottom, you’ll lose the correct angle and can ruin the edge.

You may notice a few small fibers sticking out — that’s normal with a new roller sleeve. Don’t waste time removing them by hand. They’ll disappear during sanding.

And one more thing:
Even if the first coat looks good, a second layer is usually needed for a truly flat, professional finish.

Work smarter, smoother, faster.

🧱 How to Replace Old Grout

Want to refresh your tiles without replacing them? Changing the grout can make a huge difference 👇

If the old grout is worn out or you simply want a new color, you have two options:
🔹 paint the grout
🔹 or replace it properly

For removal, use a joint cleaner tool. If you’re switching to an epoxy grout, you usually only need to remove about 2–3 mm depth of the old grout.

This works especially well on porcelain tiles, where the hard edges allow you to clean out the joints effectively without damaging the surface.

Once the old grout is removed, the joints are ready for a fresh application.

Simple upgrade, completely new look.

🧱 Why Is a Brickwork Cord Important?

Simple tool, big impact on accuracy 👇

A brickwork cord is essential for keeping lines straight and levels consistent — whether you’re laying masonry courses or aligning elements like insulation boards (EPS).

It’s not just ordinary string — it’s usually a strong nylon line that holds tension well without sagging or stretching.

🔹 Keeps your work straight and level
🔹 Highly visible (like this green one)
🔹 Maintains tension without losing shape

Small tool, precise results.

And yes… it even works for tying tomato plants 🍅😄

🧱 How to Level a Wall After Masonry Works?

After masonry work, small uneven spots are unavoidable — but easy to fix 👇

Before applying a thin coat of plaster, you need to remove high spots and excess material. For this, use a steel plaster scraper/stripper.

It’s a simple but very effective hand tool:
🔹 Scrapes off bumps and uneven areas
🔹 Cleans the surface before the next layer
🔹 Can also be used on small floor sections

The goal is to create a flat, even base so the thin plaster layer applies smoothly and bonds properly.

Quick prep, better finish.

🧱 How to Finish Brick Joints Properly

This stage is all about precision and control 👇

Most of the work is done using joint trowels, selected based on the joint width — here around 1.6–1.8 cm. The tool has a guiding strip that rests against the edge, helping you maintain consistent depth and shape.

Start by packing the grout firmly into the joint, then shape and refine it. The same method applies to both horizontal and vertical joints.

💡 Why use semi-dry grout?
It helps prevent staining and discoloration of the brick, keeping the surface clean.

For finishing, use special pads designed for joint work — different ones for verticals and horizontals.

This is one of the most detailed parts of the process — done entirely by hand for a clean, consistent finish.

🧱 What’s a Mistake When Laying Brick?

With rustic brick… it depends how you look at it 👇

Chipped edges, uneven joints, slight differences in thickness — technically, these can all be seen as “mistakes.” They can come from cutting, handling, or the material itself.

But in rustic brickwork, these imperfections are part of the character. They create a natural, authentic look that perfectly uniform bricks can’t achieve.

Of course, you can refine everything — sand edges, adjust joints — but you don’t always have to.

Sometimes what looks like a flaw… is actually the design.

🧱 How to Repair a Crack in the Wall Yourself

A solid repair comes down to proper prep and filling 👇

Start by opening the crack — remove material from both sides using a sanding knife so the filler can bond properly.

Next:
🔹 Remove all dust
🔹 Apply primer and let it dry

Now apply the filler. Make sure to press it into the crack, not just run along it — this ensures it’s fully filled.

Apply a second, thicker layer, then place reinforcement tape over the crack. Cover it with more filler and smooth it out evenly.

💡 Use enough material to fully cover the mesh.

Once everything is dry, sand the surface, clean it, and paint.

Proper steps = long-lasting repair.
