Climbing gym safety overlooked?
I started noticing something odd at climbing gyms. Serious athletes, completely dialed in, drilling sequences on auto belays.
Their focus was creating a blind spot.
When your brain is already solving holds three meters up the wall, it assumes you've finished the boring stuff at ground level. The clip-in becomes background noise. Automatic.
Until it's not.
Research shows 82.9% of climbers say they double-check their connection.
Only 10% actually do.
Auto belays removed the need for a belaying partner, which gave climbers freedom to train solo without coordinating schedules or skill levels. But that independence eliminated something we didn't realize mattered: a second set of eyes watching you clip in, feeling rope tension, staying present at ground level while you climbed.
We traded partnership for convenience.
And here's the counterintuitive part...
Experienced climbers are actually MORE vulnerable than beginners. Confidence in familiar environments creates the biggest blind spots. When you've clipped in hundreds of times, your brain fills in the memory even when you skip the step this time.
A $6 million settlement in 2023 shook the industry. Some gyms removed auto belays completely after serious incidents.
But here's the thing: the equipment rarely fails.
We do.
Flow state makes you a better athlete. It also makes you terrible at following safety checklists. The zone that helps you send your project is the same mental state that lets you climb past the belay gate without noticing.
The industry is responding with detection systems and better protocols. That helps. But the deeper lesson matters more: your strengths contain your vulnerabilities.
The thing that makes you good can make you careless.
Have you ever caught yourself on complete autopilot during something that actually needed your full attention? Like if you've ever driven home and realized you don't remember the drive at all... that same mechanism shows up in climbing gyms, at work, everywhere.
Comment below if you've experienced this.
