Therefore, it needs to be specially protected whilst ensuring that the natural properties of the wood are not impaired. Wood must be allowed to "breathe" so that it retains its elasticity and can continue to have a positive effect on room climate. Once OSMO interior finish has been applied, the wood will retain its natural appearance and feel whilst its surface will become hard-wearing, non-abrasive, water repellent, dirt resistant and will be protected against everyday accidents with water, wine, beer, fizzy drinks, etc. Should any small damages occur, surfaces can easily be touched up, with no visible brush marks. Graying wood isn't just a sign of time passing, it’s an active biological reaction happening deep within the fibers.

UV radiation breaks down lignin, the natural organic compound that holds wood fibers together and gives timber its rich, warm tone. Once lignin degrades, wood turns silver-grey, brittle, and prone to splintering. Standard film coatings or varnishes make this worse; when they inevitably crack, they trap moisture underneath, accelerating internal decay.
