The definition of sustainably is the avoidance depleting of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance.
You may read this and ask, how can I make small changes in my home to lessen my carbon footprint? Here are 5 ways to start:
Donate old clothes and appliances: Donating, or what we like to call up-cycling, clothing you don’t wear anymore or old appliances after an upgrade helps others in need and prevents a massive amount of waste. As a bonus, it can be an amazing tax write-off! *For reference of how a write-off works, please see season 2, episode 6 of Schitt’s Creek* (if the clothes/ appliances are not in usable condition, look for other recycling options available)
Use eco-friendly cleaning tools: Tools like bamboo brushes and natural sponges really help ease the waste burden. These items are durable and don’t impact the environment as much once discarded. Natural products are also often less expensive than common synthetic sponges and brushes!
Wool dryer balls: We love them as a sustainable alternative to disposable dryers sheets! They help your clothes dry, de-wrinkle faster and help you save money and reduce waste since you can use them for years! Add your own scent to the dryer balls with essential oils and it won’t stain your clothes.
Opt for reusable containers: Plastics, all though recyclable, are one of the most common items found in our landfills. It could take 200-500 yeast for most plastics to breakdown. Attempt to reuse plastic and glass containers in your home whenever you can. Also, consider using permanent use containers over disposable water bottles.
Recycle: We truly believe that most people would love to recycle more but often don’t know what options are available to them. Your local hardware store will have several recycle bins options and can help you find one to fit your household. Many waste management companies have recycling pickup programs in addition to landfill waste pickup. You can also lookup the location of your nearest recycling center or check with local dump sites to see what recycling options they may provide.
