This is a great example of something that looks simple once completed, but in fact took many (many) hours, coordination across multiple artisans, and really great team work to bring the vision to life. If you have a minute to spare, I’ll cover the high points below:
Measure, draw, measure, draw details, discuss with partners and then they measure, do shop drawings, designer approves, and yes, we measure again before we make and install. The built environment constantly changes and with that so do dimensions and decisions.
Layout. How will it flow? How will every drawer and cabinet function? What are the storage needs? Is the layout of appliances and workspace efficient?Etc.
Design. What is the look/feel we want to achieve? What materials and palette deliver that design and support the functional needs of the kitchen? Design details?
Appliances and requirements. Lay out the electrical and plumbing requirements and locations. Ventilation requirements.
Custom hood design. This is a coordinated effort between us as the designer with the artisan and the GC to build the supporting structure, taking into account the hood specifications. Also the stone fabricator needs to be involved to determine how the backsplash is impacted.
Millworker engagement to build cabinetry. This gets intensely detailed around sizing, hardware, accessories to support different functions, shop drawings and revisions, electrical placement, lighting, how things open and close, avoiding conflicts in the space…lots to consider!
Lighting design. Do we have sufficient overhead lighting? Task lighting? Do we want some ambient or mood lighting?
Plumbing and specialized plumbing requirements
Stone fabrication and installation
Coordination of all trades for the many layers of installation
Worth it! The kitchen is where we gather to spend time together. It is where we often entertain. It is the heart of the home, and therefore it is the starting point of our design process at Method + Moxie.
