CAPS is very excited to be bringing the community together to build an outdoor classroom for The Springdale Elementary! Our placemaking site will be in The Garden Space at The Springdale Elementary School, fondly know as CAPS(Corbett Arts Program w/Spanish) This is a great opportunity to come together as a community for a wonderful cause that will benefit the community for years to come. There is a place for everyone to get involved in some way or another, no matter your age or skillset. The main frame will be built by a professional contractor, however the cob bench seating can be built with the help of CAPS and Corbett Families. If you have ever had any interest in learning to build with this sustainable material, this is your chance to get your hands in the cob and help.
There's also an element of bringing in recycled materials in the cob building part of it. Using eco bottles inside the cob and using hard plastic bottle caps and plastic jar lids and other hard plastic to inlay in the cob to make mosaic type pictures. We will also be using glass, mirrors, tiles and other esthetically appealing pieces to really make the art on the structure pop. I also envisioned some glass bottles along the top of the walls to let sunlight through in a pretty fashion. I'm asking the families of CAPS to collect these items from their homes to, one, keep them out of the landfill, and two, teach the families and children that there are alternatives for their trash, like using them in eco building projects or art projects. This is the fun part where we get to be creative!
This is also a community building event. I really want to stress that everyone has something to offer, whether that be volunteering time, material or monetary donations, time with their hands(and feet mixing the cob), helping put together eco bottles, ideas, skilled expertise, a truck to help gather materials. Please let me know if you have something specific you’d like to help with! Everything is welcome and encouraged!
My goals with this project are to bring the community together, provide a nice covered space outside for the students, raise awareness of sustainable building and other permaculture ideas, and raise awareness on ways we can limit our footprint on this planet.
On this page you will find more information on how you can help. There is a specific material list of things you may have on your property just lying around waiting for a special purpose. If you find something you would like to donate, please send me a DM, email, phone call, or text. Or all! Cell service in the woods can be spotty 😊 All donations are tax deductible through the Springdale School Community Association’s Non-Profit. Any and all donations are helpful and greatly appreciated!
Thank you for choosing to be a part of The CAPS Outdoor Classroom Cob Building Project!
