This was a fun and challenging project.

While there is clearly a natural beauty to the stone, these walls should last much longer than the creosote timbers and they won’t leach chemicals into the ground water or garden soil. (I wouldn’t recommend building garden beds with railroad ties by the way, come to think of it, I wouldn’t recommend building anything with railroad ties)

Anyone care to guess how many lbs of stone this took?

Sneak peak at the next remodel Brandie and I are taking on in Galena. This home was originally built around 1900. We will likely save the historic trims on the gables and hope to save some of the original siding, floors and possibly a few lath and plaster walls. Overall it will be a nearly complete rebuild, all new plumbing, electric. and addition of kitchen off the backside of the house.

Love this design strategy

In the 1960s, Heineken created the WOBO (World Bottle), a beer bottle designed to be reused as a brick.

Inspired by a trip to Curaçao, where he saw beaches littered with his bottles and a lack of affordable housing, Alfred Heineken teamed up with architect John Habraken to design the “World Bottle.”

Though it never went into mass production, the WOBO remains a revolutionary example of multi-purpose sustainable design.
