Mr. Smith recently visited Ace Hardware to find the right nuts and bolts needed to repair the handlebar on his wheelchair. Tony didn’t just point him toward an aisle and move on. He took the time to help identify exactly what was needed and then personally installed the bolts for him.
What may seem like a small act of customer service was much bigger to us.
At Advent, we work every day to support the people we serve in being active, included, and valued members of their community. We can provide the opportunities, transportation, encouragement, and support, but true community inclusion also depends on the people we meet once we get there.
Not every community experience is equally welcoming, patient, or understanding, which is exactly why moments like this deserve recognition.
Tony treated Mr. Smith with kindness, patience, dignity, and respect. Mr. Smith was able to participate in shopping, complete his own purchase, manage his money, interact with others in the community, and leave with his wheelchair repaired. Before leaving, he made sure to thank Tony and shake his hand. ❤️
Tony, thank you for reminding us what genuine community inclusion looks like.
And thank you to Horn’s Ace Hardware in Gloucester for having people like Tony representing your store.
Sometimes inclusion really can start with a couple of nuts and bolts. 🔩❤️
