I wanted to share a wonderful project in the works here in Hutto. What started as a backyard composting project for one Cub Scout has turned into a wonderful project for the entire community. Our son started his composting project with the help of Downtown Hall of Fame, Elsie's Egg Rolls and Westphalia Meat Market collecting and giving him their green compostables. Baked 'n Sconed and other local
coffee shops contributing coffee grounds as well as compostables from our house. Now Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and other community volunteers are partnering with Hutto Lutheran Church and H.I.P.P.O.S. Connect. We are planning to install a giving and teaching garden, Hutto’s Giving Garden, on March 11th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm were children and youth of all ages and abilities can learn and give back to their community. Our harvest will be donated to the Hutto Community Food Pantry giving the kids the opportunity to see the direct impact they can have on their community. We hope to partner with Sustainable Food Center of Austin in the fall opening up even more opportunities for all ages in our community
The help and support we have received from the community so far has been absolutely amazing. Hutto Feed & Supply and McIntire’s Garden Center will be contributing vegetable seeds and plants. Home Depot is donating cinder blocks for six 3 ft. X 8 ft. raised beds. Lowes is donating the supplies for drip irrigation for all six raised beds. Andrea’s Bobcat Service will be delivering the cinder blocks as well as moving the soil for us. Gardenville is donating two yards of compost. Travis Materials is donating three yards of sandy loam. Whittlesey Landscape Supplies is giving us a gracious discount on mulch. Kelly-Moore Paints has donated the primer and paint to decorate the cinder blocks. We are also working with Green ‘n Growing in Pflugerville in hopes of obtaining companion plants too. H.I.P.P.O.S. Connect friends, the children’s ministry, the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts will be decorating the cinder blocks for three of the raised beds with their artwork. We are still in need of artists to decorate the remaining raised beds and volunteers who would like to get involved in Hutto’s Giving Garden. I feel this project is a wonderful addition to our community,
