has had an undoubtedly big weekend. The twenty-year-old made his Coachella debut to a massive crowd, and brought Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan in what was an unexpected but much appreciated performance and cover of the all-time famous track ‘1979.’ (This was Corgan’s Coachella debut too!)
Following Sombr’s grand Coachella weekend, the already Grammy nominated pop star announced the dates for his North America tour this Fall. The tour is studded with a diverse set of openers, including Interpol, The Hellp, The Last Dinner Party, Tom Odell, Dove Cameron, Balu Brigadu, King Princess, and Hannah Jadagu.
This mix of established artists and pop stars-to-be signals a transition in the pop music sphere. Especially notable is that Interpol, as a powerhouse dark indie pop, is shifting and making room for the next generation of moody artists to take the stage. Sombr could have been the opener for the iconic New York City rockers, but the young artist is proving his name as one to be recognized for years to come.
The curation of this lineup speaks volumes about Sombr’s own taste in music, adding to his story and relevance. It’s definitely a power move, to pay homage to the greats, past present and future.
