We build houses with straw!

Natural Resource Construction is growing into a full-service design, manufacturer, and build firm using straw-bale structurally insulated panels (SIPS).

Here is some interesting framing we did this week!

A hexagon interior rim joist; joists 2" 5/16ths oc at the center, 16" oc on the edge, a second hexagon beam carrying the interior floor load, projecting out to a 24 sided outer wall!

The math worked out really well, 24 being a multiple of six. It was definitely slower than typical floor framing, and used more wood, however it makes for an interesting build!

The clients will leave the framing exposed in the ceiling below, they used Foam Glass (made from recycled glass) as their floor insulation, and they will install an earthen floor above that!
Thanks for watching

A re-share of one of the straw SIP houses we assembled this year

We started setting the walls on our latest panelized project. This kit was built by another company and is not a straw house, though its good inspiration for our own kit homes!

We have a slightly more complicated foundation underway 😀
This is our first 24 sided house, there was som interesting geometry here for sure!

For those who are curious about how these homes get assembled on site, our process goes like this:

Step 1: our foundation gets layed off to match our panel diagram, so that we make sure our plans are matching up with reality.

Step 2: we secure our custom steel brackets to the panel and to the telehandler and crane. It is important that this is done properly as these panels can weight 1000 pounds and a slip is very dangerous

Step 3: apply silicone to the side of the previous panel and to the foundation. Air tightness and control is a big part of energy efficiency and moisture management, so proper detailing is imperative.

Step 4: lift the panel into place, ratchet it tightly to the previous panels and secure with nails and heavy duty screws.

Thats pretty much all there is to it, as most of the building of the walls happens in our warehouse!

Diego is going to go cross eyed trimming out this house😄
He has been building shelves, trimming out with poplar and black walnut for days.
We have a great crew and I am very greatful for them!
