Forging meat fork almost finish for a customer!

Snapped 1 1/8” hardy shank off of my mandrel today while making some latches for a customer. I was working the edges of a 1” x 1/4” piece of flat material with a 2.5lb hammer…definitely should not have broken this mandrel (quality issue). I’ll try to contact the seller to get some sort of replacement or refund if possible but until then, broken tooling is always a bummer, especially when it’s an expensive tool, so as a blacksmith you either fix your failed tooling or find another way.

ONE YEAR UPDATE‼️

It’s been a year since i got my new 250 # Fontanini/Rat Hole anvil. It’s a continental pattern anvil cast from H13 steel and I am pretty sure it’s fully tempered throughout due to the upsetting block also having roughly 85-90% rebound. I’ve been looking forward to posting this update, I’ve used the anvil in my shop almost daily to make sure I am truly putting it to the test. Ive used the anvil for delicate light work all the way up to heavy 12lb sledging. You can see the marks from constant use with a few obvious missed strikes. I’ve read some complaints online due to the Fontanini/Rat hole anvils being too soft, but Steve Fontanini expresses that he wants his anvils slightly softer than the hammer so the anvil dents with missed blows rather than chipping. This is something that I haven’t found to be an issue personally. I’ve had nothing but joy working on this beautiful masterpiece. Seeing the wear from a years worth of work, is this an anvil you’d feel comfortable purchasing or no? What are your thoughts?
