IMMODEST COTTON was launched in 2016 with the goal of creating sturdy, useful bags and accessories that bring joy in their daily use. Our products are built from colorful custom-dyed canvases, vegetable-tanned leathers and unique hardware and designed in our studio in Maine. Our products are made in both the United States and India and are held to high ethical standards and sustainability goals.

A bit ago we did the most beautiful shoot with Carley Rudd in our Biddeford studio, this is a sampling of it. As we (mentally) prepare to move to a new studio up the coast, I’m taking a min to appreciate this space and all of the people who have come through here, the collaborations it’s played a part in, and the laughter it’s held. And all the WINDOWS. Love a corner studio.

First off, the exciting news is that WASHED DENIM is back and ready for anything. We cut it in Large East West Totes and Construction Totes this time (!!!). To get the perfect denim fade, we first hand dye our canvas with natural indigo until it’s super dark, then cut and sew the bag, then enzyme wash it to pull out some of the dye. Voila! a very natural looking fade that you didn’t have to wait two years for.

I’m also throwing in a few pics of our Basket Totes in Mini and Medium for a size comparison (thank you a s h l e y l i n d s a y for the question!), and because they’re so sweet.

If you’re interested in the how and why of our Basket Totes - how they’re made and why we created the collection - here it is! Each basket is made completely by hand in Maine - one at a time - first woven in reed and then finished with woven leather handles. While each Tote is a complete object to be used as a handbag or home decor, they were made to nest within one another as a family.

It’s a project 3 years in the making, a collaboration between two dear friends. We’ve committed to making only 10 pieces of each style, and we have only a few left in each size. It is a collection stamped in time and place, an experiment in craftsmanship.

We are so crazy excited about this basket drop, I may need to lie down.

We cooked up the idea for a limited basket collection nearly 3 years ago, after my first basket-making class in Maine. Since then, we’ve been trying to figure out how to make baskets IMMODEST COTTON-y, and finally landed on the hand-braided leather handles as the all-important detail.

These baskets combine simplicity and functionality with bright pops of color and a lot of handwork. The history of basket making in Maine starts with the Wabenaki people who taught the Shaker community the skill in the 1800’s. Our pieces are inspired by this Maine tradition while aligning with our unique aesthetic.

All baskets are made by hand in Maine, and we will only have a limited number of each size (think fewer than 20 pieces each) available.
