Very cool old (1959-61) Kay 6100 getting fixed up and back into action here. These are the "on arrival" photos. One top crack repair in progress, and I need to cut a new bridge saddle. For a cheap garage sale find (I'm not the owner) this is a strikingly well-made guitar. I love the patina, and am excited to hear it when it's done!

Very fun and satisfying cheap-o project bass purchase from the Amigo Guitar Show in San Rafael, CA on Saturday. 1960s Aria "Diamond" short-scale violin bass. The action was way high and it was not passing any signal, but it's restored and thumping now. Additional comments are on the individual photos.

I wish I'd snapped a "before" photo of this old Jasmine acoustic guitar; a shell when it was given to me. I did cosmetic things to it, and then when I strung it up, the bridge splintered and exploded off of it! Second go (instead of taking it to the landfill) involved bolting a Wilkinson half-Tele bridge to the top (there's a tortoiseshell bridge veneer covering the pretty ugly damage to the laminate; same thing in red pearloid MOTO on the headstock). The metal bridge also gave me something to run a ground wire to! Plays and sounds great.

Serious tone wood! I swapped this old generic J-Bass neck onto it and that's what it needed. Made the body a year or two ago. Thick spar varnish applied with a brush for that old workbench aesthetic.

Anyone’s guess what I did with this one?

For the record, I’m not sure if I actually can’t stand Maroon 5–I’m so unable to hear past how much I can’t stand Adam Levine. Got given this slightly gutted First Act 222 Adam Levine model (solid abs, lousy overall aesthetic) and immediately ripped a swimming pool rout into it. Going to entertain myself with stuffing multiple loose random pickups into it and do some oddball wiring schemes.

Been a little bit since I had a new old something to work on!! I’ll need to carve a bridge, but looks structurally solid and sound...and cool!! I like these old Kay necks (brass frets and “mother-of-bowling-ball” inlays).

Harvesting some parts and supplies from an old broken Heathkit Oscilloscope (I have a functioning one) and a kick to see the various 12AU7s in it; some made by GE, some by Tung Sol and one Mullard (but all also labeled as “Daystrom” brand). I’ll swap a 12AT7 for a 12AX7 sometimes, but the 12AU7 is generally too little gain. Good wire haul.

Unusual location for the controls, to stay clear of the cool graphics on the top; except for the jack!—that had to go there. Old 1970s Kay pickup in the soundhole.

I’m really happy with how this is shaping up; it’s an Epiphone PR-350 that came to me with the neck sheared off at the heel. I’ve been laboring over restoring and electrifying old thrashed acoustics on a quest to create a gig-solid one; this’ll have an old 1970s Kay pickup in the soundhole and an under-saddle (Hey!!—5 cowboys, but NO horse!!) piezo strip in the bridge. A big part of my 2021 (or more likely 2022 at this rate; mask up, folks!!) solo gig merch table plan involves Wreckage Guitars t-shirt sales, so I’m trying to build in ‘conversation starting’ along with functionality. There’s some purple in the top color, in tribute to the guitars you might win on the Midway of the Yolo County Fair.
