When You Don't Agree With Someone

Marami ng relationships ang nagkasira dahil sa magkakaibang opinion tungkol sa religion, politics at kung anu-ano pa. Ilang chat groups na ba ang iyong nilisan dahil sa toxic na discussions doon? Ilan na ba ang na-unfriend mo sa social media dahil hindi ka sang-ayon sa kanila? Ano nga ba ang magandang maging response kapag mayroong mga pananaw o opinion na hindi kagaya ng sa iyo? Paano ba natin maiiwasan na ang disagreements ay mauwi sa heated arguments?

Magandang araw, ako si Maloi Malibiran-Salumbides, partner mo sa inspiradong buhay at trabaho.

May magandang paalala sa atin ang 2 Timothy 2:23-24, "Don’t have anything to do with foolish arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful." Hangga't makaiiwas tayo sa arguments na tiyak namang mauuwi sa pag-aaway, umiwas tayo. Even Jesus, stayed away from such discussions which were meant to trap or test him. May mga taong totoong nagtatanong. Pero mayroon namang ang layunin lang ay para igiit na tama sila at mali ang lahat.

What should you do when you don't agree with someone?

1) Listen and learn. Listening to different opinions and views broadens our world. Hindi mo kailangang sang-ayunan ang lahat. Pero may pakinabang sa pakikinig kahit sa mga taong hindi natin kapareho ang pananaw. You can learn even from opposing views. You will be able to fine-tune and strengthen your own convictions and beliefs when you understand other people's views and opinions.

2) Respectfully disagree. Nagpapakita ng ibayong maturity at strength of character ang taong kayang ipahayag ang kanyang disagreement sa paraang mahinahon at magalang. Ang sabi nga sa Proverbs 15:1-2, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly." Magandang matutunan kung paano mag-express ng ating disagreement sa paraang hindi nakagagalit sa ating kausap.

3) Value relationships more than winning arguments. Higit nating pahalahagan ang ating relationship kaysa ang manalo sa mga debate at argumento. What's the point of always having the last say when at the end of the day you are left with no one to talk to dahil nainis o nagalit na sa iyo ang mga tao. Yes, be passionate about your beliefs and convictions. Know where you stand on issues but also remember what Romans 12:18 says, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."

Disagreements don't have to end in heated arguments. Magkakaiba ang ating mga pananaw sa maraming bagay. We can listen and learn from one another. In points where we don't agree, let's respectfully disagree.
