Selamat Menyambut Pesta Perahu Naga! Happy Dragon Boat Festival!

​What is the Dragon Boat Festival?
​The Dragon Boat Festival (also known as the Duanwu Festival) is a traditional holiday with over 2,000 years of history. It falls on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar.

The festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a beloved ancient Chinese poet and minister who drowned himself in a river out of despair over his country's political corruption.

​Today, the festival is celebrated with two main traditions:

​Dragon Boat Racing:
Local villagers raced out in long boats to save Qu Yuan, beating drums to scare away fish and evil spirits. This grew into the energetic, synchronized team sport practiced worldwide today.

​Eating Zongzi (Bak Chang / Chang): To prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body, people threw triangles of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves into the water. Today, these savory or sweet rice dumplings are a staple treat shared among family and friends during the festival.
