REMINDER: Join us tomorrow, 6 October, for the webinar and find out how better waste management could help your city tackle climate change.

Solid waste management is more than a service delivery challenge. Done strategically, it can help cities reduce emissions, build climate resilience, improve public health and create local economic opportunities.

🌍 From waste challenge to climate opportunity
Explore how better waste collection, landfill management, recycling, waste diversion and circular economy approaches can deliver climate benefits.

🏙️ City case study: City of Windhoek
Hear how the City of Windhoek is approaching waste management, including key challenges, lessons learned and opportunities to strengthen it as part of broader climate action.

🤝 Peer-to-peer exchange
Share experiences and explore how practical, scalable approaches can be adapted to different city contexts.

We’ll also look at how waste management interventions can be translated into practical climate actions through the process – from identifying challenges to prioritising actions that can be implemented, financed and reported.

Every rainy season, our cities pay twice: once to clean up after floods, and again to rebuild what should have been built to withstand them.

The problem isn't a lack of knowledge. Many cities have detailed climate risk maps, development plans and budgets, but the two rarely meet, leaving investors asking where the bankable projects are.

Mombasa and Nakuru are changing that. By building climate risk data into their County Integrated Development Plans, they're shaping budgets and creating a pipeline of investment-ready projects: nature-based coastal defences, stormwater drainage and risk-proofed transport.

Resilience Initiative Africa (RIA) and the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa ( ) invite you to a public panel on what's working. You'll learn:
🔹 How secondary cities can embed climate risk data in everyday planning and budgeting
🔹How to turn local risk assessments into projects that attract PPPs and climate finance
🔹How national governments and partners can connect county planning to financial markets

Who should join: county leaders and planners, development partners, DFIs, investors, private sector firms, civil society, and anyone working on resilient cities.

What's the biggest barrier between your city's climate risk data and a fundable project: data gaps, budget processes, investor appetite, or something else? Tell us in the comments 👇 We'll take the strongest questions to the panel.

🌱How do you turn a climate plan into a reality?

All CoM SSA signatories commit to developing a Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP). But a only delivers impact when its priorities are reflected in budgets, institutions, projects and investments. 📑A SEACAP is therefore not the end of the journey: it provides the evidence base and strategic direction for implementation.

This week we will share replicable approaches from our signatories who are turning their climate plans into actions. Starting with the Nakuru County Government - Official.

By institutionalising priority actions from its SEACAP, Nakuru County has allocated and mobilised its own resources for implementation, complemented by external support, including financing secured through ’s Financing Locally-Led Climate Action ( ) programme. Through these broad implementation efforts, the County has advanced projects including ecosystem restoration, energy-efficiency measures and the installation of smart energy meters in county facilities.

💬These insights were shared during our recent peer-to-peer exchange webinar. Read in full 🔗 https://comssa.org/en/news/implementing-a-climate-action-plan-lessons-and-inspiring-examples-from-african-cities

Bringing biogas to Ghanaian schools♻️

In partnership with Oekobit and co-implementing partner Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Ghana (STMA) is implementing school-based waste separation and biogas systems that reduce waste while generating renewable energy.

This marks the implementation of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate &Energy (GCoM)–ÖKOBIT GmbH biogas pilot project in STMA (Ghana), one of three participating cities alongside Mombasa County (Kenya) and Basse Area Council (The Gambia).

The project officially launched in July 2026 with a week of hands-on capacity-building, bringing together more than 50 participants, including STMA technical staff, students, and officials from the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly and Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly.

The week also included engagement with the Ghana Secondary Technical School, Fijai Senior High School and Sekondi College, with the official project launch by Hon. Mayor Frederick Faustinus Faidoo (STMA).🚀

As digesters are installed across participating schools, the project is delivering tangible benefits:
♻️ Circularity in action: Organic waste is converted into biogas for clean , while nutrient-rich digestate can be returned to the soil.
🎓 Skills for sustainability: Schools are building the knowledge and capacity needed to operate and maintain these systems, supporting long-term local ownership.

What's next?
➡️ Complete biogas installations across all selected schools.
➡️ Formalise roles and responsibilities through agreements between STMA and participating schools.
➡️ Strengthen governance arrangements for long-term operation.
➡️ Monitor system performance and provide ongoing technical support.
