Build it Zonke Yes We Can! One of the ways we do this is through our ongoing sponsorship of under 13 soccer development in Southern Africa.

With our core values of Family, Entrepreneurship and Passion at the heart of everything we do, Build it's group of over 360 retail stores across Southern Africa have been supplying building materials and serving our communities for more than 32 years. Show up at half past four this Wednesday and you will be looking at a shut roller door. 🔨

Molweni Motherwell. 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟰 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 is a public holiday, and while Build it Zonke is open for the day, the doors do not stay open until the usual 17:30 weekday close. For the holiday, we trade from 𝟬𝟴:𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟲:𝟬𝟬.

Nothing stalls a midweek home project faster than getting the day off, measuring up at the house, and walking over in the late afternoon after the shutters have already come down.

Come in during the morning so you have the full day ahead of you and plenty of daylight left to finish the job at home.

Molweni, Motherwell. If this month-end's job is the bathroom floor, look at this gold tap before you tile.

It stands on its own behind the bath in The Bathroom Square, with no wall to carry its pipes. So where would they go?

Under the floor. At home, a 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝗽 like this is fed by hot and cold pipes that run in the floor and come up exactly where it stands.

If you want one beside your bath, plan it while the floor is still bare. Choose the bath and the tap, then 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁 where each one will stand. 📍

A 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 lays the pipes to the tap's spot and tests them. Only then do the cement and tiles go down. The tap itself goes on last. 🔧

Tile first, and the new floor has to be opened up to get those pipes in.

Mix it right once, or build the step twice. 🧱

You have seen the step that went wrong. By its first winter the top turns to powder under everybody's shoes. Often it was mixed by guesswork, a few spades of this and a few of that, then drowned in water to make it easy to work.

Getting it right costs nothing but attention. Pick 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 and use it for the cement, the sand and the stone, filled level every time, with the same number of buckets of each in every batch. A bucket measures. A spade guesses. 🪣

Turn it all over dry until the heap is one even grey, with no streaks of sand showing. Only then add water, a little at a time, and stop while it still 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗽 on the spade, never runny enough to pour. Extra water makes it easier to spread and weaker once it sets.

When it's in, cover the new step or path and keep it damp for the first few days, so it hardens slowly instead of drying out too fast.

A bath on claw feet. A whole wall of tiles. A paint bar in every colour. 🛁

This is the inside of the new 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗸𝗲, right here at Zonke Plaza, relaunched on 22 October. Go through the photos and you'll find The Bathroom Square with its taps, toilets, showers, baths and basins, The Paint Bar and the Colour Mixing Bar, the power tools wall, The Tile Centre, the timber section and the electrical aisle.

The relaunch deals are still on until 𝟳 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿.

Somebody in your house checks the gate lock twice before bed. 🔒

Some nights it's the padlock that sticks, and the key only turns after a jiggle. Some nights it's the latch that has worked loose, so the gate needs a lift before it will close. Either way, it's the last job of the day, every day.

This 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱, make that job an easy one.

Fix the latch first. A new padlock on a loose latch is still a loose latch, so tighten it or replace it until the gate closes without a lift.

Then choose the 𝗽𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 to fit it. The shackle should pass through the latch with little room to spare, so it sits snug instead of rattling.

Last, sort out the keys. Keep a spare inside, somewhere everybody at home knows, so nobody is locked out when the only key has gone to work.
