No amount of rain or auto-focus delay could wipe the smile from Terry’s face, or from his voice.

Last week, Terry collected this incredible 5 metre long striped ebony board from Theo at Agora Timbers in Brisbane.

This board has quite a story.

It came from a mature ebony tree, which has since been replaced with 1,500 juvenile ebony plants. Those young trees are now doing their work in nature, growing strongly and actively storing carbon.

The timber from this mature tree will now be transformed into high-quality hand tools designed to last for generations. Dense timber means dense carbon storage, and when that timber becomes a tool built to last for decades, or even centuries, it continues to hold that story in a very practical way.

The commercial harvest also supports much-needed services in a truly remote village, creating value for the community, the supplier, the maker and the end user.

For us, this is a beautiful example of timber being used with care, purpose and respect. A rare material, responsibly sourced, and destined to become tools that bring joy to woodworkers for a very long time.

Terry opening up rare African Blackwood in the HNT Gordon workshop.

This stage is all judgement. Every cut has to balance grain direction, yield, figure, function and safety while working around faults and making the most of an extremely valuable log.

It may look simple, but it definitely isn’t.

This timber is already destined for a complete plane set, but a few specialty planes may emerge from the process.

Collectors, keep an eye out.

A very special set of HNT Gordon moulding planes in ringed gidgee.

There is something wonderful about a matched set like this. The figure in the timber, the brass wedges, the steel, the shaping and the repetition all come together in a way that feels more like a legacy piece than a simple tool set.

Our special moulding plane sets are custom made, with timber selection and plane combinations carefully considered for each customer. They are made to be used, admired, maintained and hopefully passed on.

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Raf Nathan.

Raf made an extraordinary contribution to woodworking in Australia through Australian Wood Review and the Timber & Working with Wood Show, and his influence will be felt for many years to come.

We extend our sincere condolences to Linda, his family, and all who knew and loved him.

Rest in peace, Raf.
