ECU City presented a unique acoustic challenge: a vertical university campus built above live transport infrastructure, with specialist performance venues stacked throughout the building.

Now home to the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), the Minderoo Centre for Performance Excellence brings together eight performance and rehearsal spaces across four levels, with acoustics playing a critical role in their design.

Durra Panel was used across multiple spaces as part of modular suspended ceiling systems, providing sound absorption and assisting with breakout noise control. The ceiling application was suspended independently from the concrete slabs above, responding to the acoustic requirements of the vertically stacked spaces.

A great example of Durra Panel integrated into a complex performing arts environment where acoustic performance was fundamental to the design.

Woodleigh School’s Futures Centre puts material choice at the centre of sustainable design.

Durra Panel was used across the walls and ceilings in place of traditional plaster, supporting the project’s focus on non-toxic materials, carbon storage and healthy indoor environments.

Designed in collaboration with Joost Bakker and architect Frank Burridge, the project followed the Living Building Institute’s Red List requirements. Even the Durra Panel off-cuts were mulched and returned to the school gardens at the end of installation.

A considered approach to materials, from installation through to end of life.

Buildings and construction account for 37% of global CO₂ emissions, making material choice a critical part of reducing the impact of the built environment.

The difference between materials can be significant. While conventional building materials add embodied carbon, Durra Panel has a net negative Global Warming Potential of −19.3 kg CO₂e/m², making it a truly carbon-negative building material.

It starts with the straw. As wheat grows, it removes CO₂ from the atmosphere and stores that carbon within the plant. By using reclaimed agricultural straw to make Durra Panel, that carbon remains locked into the building material rather than being released back into the atmosphere.
