Blast from the past: it all starts with an idea.

In 1989, one of Hansa’s early drum chippers began with a kitchen-bench idea, a shoestring budget and a collection of scrap metal that looked more promising to Manfred than it probably did to anyone else.

There was no dedicated R&D facility. The workshop was wherever there was room to build, the test site was the back garden, and the development process was refreshingly straightforward:

Build it. Test it. Learn something. Change it. Test it again.

Eventually, the homemade prototype became a finished machine ready for Fieldays - with Manfred’s daughter Heidi providing the all-important final inspection.

These early experiments helped lay the foundations for the technology Hansa continues to develop today. The engineering has evolved considerably, but the starting point remains the same:

An idea - and the determination to see where it leads.

Blast from the past: Hansa at Fieldays.

One of Hansa’s first appearances at the New Zealand National Fieldays - back when the exhibition budget covered a tent, a few handwritten signs and, apparently, not quite enough guy ropes.

The crowd was building nicely. We’re still not entirely sure whether they were interested customers or concerned onlookers waiting to see if the tent would make it through the afternoon.

Either way, it got people talking.

No elaborate stand. No digital displays. Just founder Manfred, a working demonstration and the firm belief that enthusiasm could compensate for almost anything - including structural engineering.

Shoestring budget. Big ambitions. Tent still standing.

🌿 Blast from the past: Hansa, 1980s edition.

Before purpose-built demo trailers, polished displays and generous travel budgets, there was founder Manfred, a classic Mini and a roof rack loaded with enough branches to make the local council nervous.

This was Hansa in the early days: big ideas, a shoestring budget and absolutely no wasted space. If the demonstration material didn’t fit in the car, it went on the car… and occasionally became most of the car.

Proof that you don’t need fancy equipment to get a business moving - just determination, ingenuity and some very optimistic tie-downs.

Who needs a ute when you’ve got a Mini?
