A lot of passive houses comprimise on design aesthetics in favour of thermal performance.
This passive house achieves both!

Located in Longlea just outside of Ballarat in Victoria, the house has high raking eaves and an angular form that is strikingly modern. Yet is uses familiar cladding materials like and .

The blond spruce windows compliment the muted greens and browns of the joinery. Outside, the windows have a dark aluminium to match the dark cladding and light aluminium to match the light cladding - a clever way of achieving interesting contrast on different walls rather than contrasting the window frames against the walls.

With a blower door test result of 0.4 ACHn50, a heat recovery ventilation system and thick walls full of insulation, the comfort of the occupants is guaranteed.

This Alphington house would have to be one of prettiest passive houses we’ve been involved in.

The proportions, lines and angles are just perfect. The Jet black coloured windows contrast well with the crisp white cladding.

Whenever slices are taken out of this white wedge-shaped building to sculpt the entry, a natural wooden material is revealed, like when you cut through a rainbow cake, the interior is different to the outer skin. The front windows follow this idea with very deep external reveals made of the same timber.

The inside of the house is calming and the use of Traffic white windows means they don’t draw attention to the eye, allowing the feature timber floors and joinery to shine.

I’m looking forward to seeing the Sunny Passivhaus getting certified.

Here are the first photos of the Huff n Puff passive house in Ruffy.

Named after the company Huff and Puff Constructions that supplied
the wall panels, this house features polished concrete floors, feature timber ceilings, and european pine windows.

There is an honesty in allowing these building materials to be visible in their natural finish without being covered up with layers of paint. The windows are made from finger jointed pine, a process that uses shorter lengths of timber joined together to form longer lengths. It is a more sustainable product because the short sections would have gone to waste otherwise.

The exterior of the windows is powdercoated aluminum, a low maintenance product that can also hold up to bushfires in zones.

This is the 48th house in Australia to be built and certified to the highest building standard in the world - the standard.

Its airtightness has been measured at 0.38 air changes per hour at 50Pa. It is superbly ventilated with guaranteed fresh filtered air every minute of the day through the heat recovery ventilation system. And it is thermally comfortable with a theoretical $140 heating bill for the year delivered through a split system AC at an average 30c per kWh.

What I noticed when I visited the Buxton Passive House was the lack of fencing. When you look outside, you see green grass, hills and clouds and a few houses rather than a long Colorbond fence. The best of both worlds - the rural feel but without the upkeep.
