HERNE CONTINUING FAMILY’S LEGACY

THE Herne surname is synonymous within the V8 Dirt Modified racing scene, and the latest speedway racing Herne family member, Joshua Herne, is currently making his first steps into V8 Dirt Modifieds.

Growing up around the sport of speedway in his home town of Lismore in northern NSW, Joshua has always wanted to follow in the tyre tracks of his uncle and six-time Australian V8 Dirt Modified Champion Stuart Herne, and over the past 12 months he has purchased a Bicknell car from former Australian Champion David Clark and just last month commenced his V8 Dirt Modified racing journey.

“Being from Lismore, the V8 Dirt Modifieds have always been massive, and I’ve always wanted to step into the class since I was a kid, and I’m very grateful to now be in the position to start living out a childhood dream of mine,” commented the 31-year-old racer from Lismore.

“The V8 Dirt Modifieds are one of the most competitive classes in the country and they are very strong here in the Lismore area, so it’s great to now be a part of it all as a driver.”

Herne continued by saying that the goal is to establish himself in V8 Dirt Modified racing for the long term.

“I love V8 Dirt Modified racing and I’m hoping this is the start of competing in the class for many years to come,” he said.

“Carrying the Herne surname doesn’t put too much pressure on me, but I’m very proud of my family and the main aim is to continue the family’s legacy in V8 Dirt Modified racing. Uncle Stuart has been a massive help to me with my racing over the years and now with the move into V8 Dirt Modifieds, and there isn’t much he doesn’t know about a V8 Dirt Modified and being able to race one.”

Although Herne purchased his V8 Dirt Modified 12 months ago, it’s been a tough journey since then, after he suffered a spinal injury in a go karting accident during the Queensland Title in July of last year, where he has been sidelined from racing up until last month, when he returned to the driver’s seat in V8 Dirt Modified racing. Herne comes into V8 Dirt Modified racing with a lot of motorsport experience, such as two seasons on the speedway in Modlites and before that, he spent 20 years on the tar circuits in go karting, which has seen him collect over eight state title victories.

With the 2023-24 season coming towards an end, Herne is looking forward to competing in the remaining race meetings that are this Saturday night’s $5,000 to win Champion of Champions event at Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway in Queensland and then the following weekend (May 4 and 5) the Australian Championship at Bundaberg’s Autobarn Carina International Speedway in Queensland.

“I’m looking forward to these two big events and the goals are to just get as much track time as possible and learning as I go,” he enthused.

“I’m really excited about the learning curve aboard a quality Bicknell car from a top racer like David Clark, and hopefully I can develop into a top-10 contender down the track and be able to hit the ground running for my first full campaign in the 2024-25 season.”
