Cypress Posts: Strong, Natural & Ready for the Ground
Cypress is a favourite for outdoor projects thanks to its natural durability, termite resistance, and beautiful grain. But even naturally tough timbers benefit from the right prep before going into the ground—and a few extra steps can make a big difference to long-term performance.
Why Prep Matters
Ground contact exposes timber to constant moisture and soil movement. By sealing the post properly, you reduce water absorption, minimise splitting, and keep the timber stable for years to come.
How to Prepare Cypress Posts Before Installing
1. Allow the timber to dry
Dry timber takes sealer more effectively, creating a stronger protective barrier.
2. Seal ALL cut ends immediately
Any fresh cuts or drill holes should be sealed straight away to prevent moisture entering the exposed fibres.
3. Use a quality timber sealer or end-grain treatment
Choose an exterior-grade timber sealer designed for ground contact, high-moisture areas, or end-grain protection.
Most local paint suppliers will stock:
⇢ A penetrating oil-based sealer, or
⇢ A wax-based end-grain treatment, or
⇢ A heavy-duty exterior timber preservative
Any of these will help create a moisture-resistant barrier on the lower section of the post.
4. Apply extra coats to the underground section
Coat the bottom 300–400mm with a generous layer of sealer. This is the area that needs the most protection.
5. Improve drainage at the base
Before setting the post, add a 100mm layer of gravel or crushed rock at the bottom of the hole to help water drain away.
