🌿 RANDOM MONDAY MADNESS – TIMBER & LANDSCAPING EDITION 🪵
1. Timber keeps “breathing” forever
Even after it’s been cut, dried, and installed, timber continues to expand and contract with moisture in the air. That’s why gaps, movement, and seasonal changes are completely normal in decks and flooring.
2. Some hardwoods are tougher than steel (kind of…)
Australian hardwoods like Spotted Gum and Ironbark are so dense they can actually blunt drill bits and chew through nails if you’re not pre-drilling 🔩
3. Trees can “talk” to each other 🌳
Through underground fungal networks (often called the “Wood Wide Web”), trees can share nutrients and even warn nearby trees of pests or disease.
4. Decks can get HOT… really hot ☀️
On a 30°C day, dark timber or composite decking can reach surface temps of 60°C+. Lighter colours and good airflow underneath make a huge difference.
5. Not all mulch is equal
Different mulches break down at different rates. Hardwood mulch lasts longer, while soft mulches break down faster and improve soil quicker—so it depends on your goal.
6. Treated pine isn’t just “treated” once
Modern treated pine goes through a pressure process that forces preservatives deep into the timber—helping protect it from termites, rot, and fungi for years.
7. The right spacing = longer-lasting decks
Leaving proper gaps between boards isn’t just for looks—it allows drainage, airflow, helps keep your deck cooler and reduces the chance of rot and mould.
8. Landscaping can increase property value 💰
A well-designed outdoor space can add serious value to a home—some estimates say up to 10–15% when done right.
9. Timber is one of the most sustainable building materials
When sourced responsibly, timber is renewable, stores carbon, and requires less energy to produce compared to steel or concrete.
10. Your backyard has its own microclimate
Sun, wind, drainage, and soil conditions can vary massively even within the same yard—which is why plant and material selection matters more than people think.
