❄️ EARLY SEASON SNOW LIKELY OVERNIGHT
- PARTS OF ALPINE, CENTRAL

- Posted: 5:02pm, Wednesday 6 May

A burst of unusually cold polar air is expected to sweep across southeastern Australia late Wednesday into Thursday, bringing the chance of snow showers to parts of NSW.

Snow is forecast across the Snowy Mountains and alpine regions, with snow levels potentially lowering to around 700-800 metres during Thursday. These are very low snow levels for early May, and could allow snow showers or sleet to extend beyond the ski fields and into elevated inland communities.

Towns including Orange and Oberon have a chance of seeing light snow showers, while parts of the Central Tablelands and higher areas of the Blue Mountains could also see brief flurries if enough moisture reaches further east. In the Snowy Mountains, up to 20cm of snow could accumulate across higher elevations and ski resort areas.

Cold, windy and wintry conditions are expected across much of the state’s south and ranges throughout Thursday, with temperatures well below average for this time of year.

For Sydney residents hoping to catch a glimpse of snow, Oberon and the higher Blue Mountains may offer the best chance, although any snowfall outside the alpine regions is expected to be light and short-lived.

Drivers heading towards alpine or elevated regions should keep up to date with road conditions and forecasts, as hazardous driving conditions may develop during the day.
