We enjoyed reading the Metropolis Magazine’s feature on Sydney’s new Fish Market! 👏

The new facility, designed by 3XN/GXN in collaboration with BVN Architecture, sits on Blackwattle Bay and features the largest mass timber roof in the Southern Hemisphere; a bold architectural move that speaks to both aesthetic ambition and sustainable thinking. 🌱

The roof is more than just a striking visual feature. Its engineered timber structure, combined with low carbon materials to support the earth.

Projects like this show how engineered timber can be used at scale and across unexpected building types. It’s exciting to see timber embraced not only for its warmth, but for its role in sustainability and performance. We can’t wait for you to see it come to life this month. 🪴

You asked, Tim answered 🎣

After rolling this one out in snippets on our stories, here’s the full reel from outside the Sydney Fish Market. Tim tackled your questions on the project, the timber, and what it really takes to deliver something of this scale.

Grab a coffee, hit play, and keep the questions coming! We’ll do this again 👀

Day one is well and truly underway for Theca Timber at the convention. said the energy this year felt stronger than ever, with double the Australian attendance compared to last year. It was a real chance to reconnect with familiar faces and meet new people who are pushing timber construction forward!

It was also noted how healthy the market is looking, with more projects now being conceived in timber from the very beginning. It is a really positive sign for the future of our industry. A standout was definitely the booth 😆

A highlight for us was Paolo catching up with Ringo Thomas from , pictured above. The artistic shelter mockup using carton finger joint technology was another standout, showing just how creative and ambitious timber design can be.

What a moment for us at Theca Timber. Fresh off winning the People’s Choice Award at the 2025, our Co-Director visited Tumbalong Green in Sydney to take in this incredible project once again.

We can’t thank you enough for voting and supporting us. This award means so much because it comes directly from the public.

The Tumbalong Green Sound Shell is one of our most ambitious projects to date with over 200 unique timber members, more than 800 bespoke steel connections, and a roof structure that blends Glulam and steel with a striking membrane. Designed by , engineered by and brought to life by , it is now the beating heart of Darling Harbour’s events and celebrations.

Seeing this space alive with music, energy, and community makes all the hard work worthwhile.

We’re proud to have been part of bringing it to life and we are so grateful to everyone who believed in it enough to cast their vote.

Last night we celebrated at the in Melbourne at the Regis Hotel. The dinner was beautiful, the conversations inspiring, and the results unforgettable.

We are so proud to share that two of our projects took home awards.

The Tumbalong Green Sound Shell by won the People’s Choice Award, something we owe entirely to your support and votes. This project has quickly become an icon in Darling Harbour. Its striking diagrid timber roof is not only visually stunning but also a demonstration of how engineered timber can be used at scale in public spaces.

The Northern Memorial Park Depot by also took out the Commercial Building category, a huge achievement for everyone involved. This project redefines what a civic workplace can be. Its mass timber trusses and thoughtful detailing created a space that is uplifting, sustainable, and deeply connected to place. The recognition is a testament to the vision of the architects and the collaboration of everyone involved.

Adam and Paolo were there representing Theca and had an amazing night connecting with so many inspiring people from across the industry. It was a special evening that reminded us just how much creativity, sustainability and innovation is happening in timber right now.

We’ll be sharing more photos and a closer look at the winning projects in the coming days, but for now we just want to say thank you to everyone who continues to support our work.

The People’s Choice is back – and voting is now open for the 2025 Australian Timber Design Awards.

We are proud to see the Oran Park Leisure Centre among this year’s nominees. Designed to serve a fast-growing community, the centre is more than just a leisure facility. It is a benchmark for how engineered timber can deliver sustainable, high-performing, and welcoming public spaces. From its structural efficiency to its warm natural aesthetic, the project reflects the best of modern timber design.

If you’ve admired our work or partnered with us along the way, we’d love your support. Every vote counts and helps shine a spotlight on the role of mass timber in shaping vibrant community hubs.

The People’s Choice is back – and voting is now open for the 2025 Australian Timber Design Awards

Last year, the Michael Kirby Building at Macquarie University took home both the People’s Choice and Best Public Building awards; a proud moment for our team and a celebration of what timber can achieve in public architecture.

This year, we’re thrilled to have three standout projects in the running:

• Tumbalong Green Sound Shell
• Oran Park Leisure Centre
• Northern Memorial Park Depot

Each of these projects showcases the potential of engineered timber to create sustainable, high-performing community spaces that are as beautiful as they are functional.

If you’ve admired our work or partnered with us along the way, we’d love your support.

What an incredible start to the World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE 2025)

Our Co-Directors Paolo Aschieri and Adam Shears were on the ground in Brisbane as the conference kicked off on the 22nd, and the energy has been nothing short of inspiring.

A huge thank you to the Parker Precision crew for helping set up the Rubner Timber Engineering stand, featuring laminated-timber portals supplied by Theca Timber. It’s always a pleasure collaborating with teams that share our passion for precision and craft.

We were proud to see Adam speak on a panel and present some of our most exciting recent work, from landmark civic projects to the evolving role of engineered timber in shaping a more sustainable built environment.

With global leaders and innovators in timber engineering all under one roof, the conversations have been rich, technical, and full of momentum for the future.

There’s so much more to come. Keep an eye on this space as we share more from the conference floor over the coming days.
