What actually stops a screw pile from pulling straight back out of the ground?

Mark demonstrates it using nothing more than a scale model and dry beach sand.

As the pile screws deeper, it becomes harder to turn. That resistance is measured as torque, and once the required torque is reached, it gives an indication that the pile has reached its required capacity.

Did you expect dry sand to hold it that firmly?

If one helix gives you 150kN, does adding another really give you 300kN?

In theory, you might expect it to.

But when the first helix is driven through the ground, it disturbs the soil above it. That means the second helix doesn’t necessarily have the same bearing conditions or carry the same load.

That’s why we take a more conservative approach and rate our twin-helix pile at 200kN rather than simply doubling it to 300kN.

Are you designing screw piles to their strengths?

Screw piles work particularly well when they’re working in tension and compression.

For applications like retaining wall footings or pedestrian bridge abutments, using piles as a couple can help eliminate the bending moment of a single pile and significantly reduce lateral and shear forces at the top of the pile.

It’s not just about specifying screw piles. It’s about designing the footing to take advantage of how they work.

Every great product starts somewhere.

When we set out to create an adjustable foundation system, our first prototype definitely wasn't the sleek solution we have today.

It worked but it was overcomplicated.

After plenty of engineering, testing and refinement, we developed the patented attachment nut you see today: a much simpler solution that allows the bearer plate to be adjusted after installation.

How do you normally secure reinforcing to your piles?

Some systems require drilling through the pile. This solution allows reinforcing to be clamped using attachment nuts and the integrated top plate without drilling through the pile.

It's a simple engineering detail designed to help preserve the structural integrity of the pile while making reinforcement easy to install.

Not every pile detail is just a design choice.

A concrete footing sitting directly on a cut pile or a pile without a bearing plate can create significantly higher bearing stress than one designed to distribute the load properly.

That's why details below ground matter just as much as the structure above it.
