I could post this every single day.
If you’re a woman in midlife and you’re trying to lose weight, feel stronger, have more energy and age well, please don’t overlook muscle.
I am a big, big, big believer that muscle mass, along with cardiovascular fitness, is the longevity holy grail.
When you build lean muscle, it’s MOVING that muscle that mops up a lot of the nutrition you consume.
So if you build muscle through strength, resistance or weight training, and then you move your body with low intensity movement like walking, it’s like you’re taking your V8 for a drive.
Think about it.
These days, we’re all worried about the cost of fuel.
So which car would use more fuel for the same journey?
A 4 cylinder or a V8?
A little lunch box or a yank tank?
The bigger the engine, the more fuel it is going to consume, right?
Your body works in a similar way.
When you build muscle, your body becomes more like a V8. It has more engine. More capacity. More beautiful, fuel-using tissue.
Then, when you move that body, even with simple movement, your body has more muscle to move.
You don’t have to race it around Mt Panorama all day.
You don’t have to do punishing workouts or exhaust yourself.
You could just be taking it into town to do the weekly shop. You could be walking. Gardening. Dancing in the kitchen. Doing a strength class. Getting your steps in.
But if you leave it in the garage, it won’t consume a drop.
That’s the part we can’t skip.
Build the muscle. Then move the muscle.
Strength training builds the engine. Walking and daily movement take it for a drive.
So if you’ve been thinking, “I just need to eat less,” I want to gently offer another thought.
Maybe your body doesn’t need less and less.
Maybe your body needs strength. Maybe your body needs muscle. Maybe your body needs movement that feels doable and sustainable.
Our bodies need to MOVE!
If this makes sense to you, comment V8 and tell me: are you currently strength training, walking, or doing both?
